If nothing else, you need the caliber as a reason to buy the neat guns it comes in:

Well, I've bought guns because I had some ammo I needed to get rid of, so I guess this isn't much different.... :D

Anyone have the stainless version?

Edit: It appears to all be academic anyway at least regarding the Marlin.
They are simply unavailable from every place I've tried, and most are not even willing to attempt ordering one. They just sort of chuckle and hang up the phone. Hmm......

Hey Gewehr98,

Is Tenoroc the location you took that photo at? Just wondering because it looks so familiar.

Bernie?

Nope.

Indian River County public range, near Fellsmere east of I-95. I would imagine a lot of Florida outdoor ranges may look similar, form follows function and all. ;)

After all this, nobody...NOBODY has mentioned Billy Dixon.

Of course, it was (probably) a .50-90, but hey, semantics.

You never know when you're gonna run across a band of Comanches or Kiowas around here.

Rabbit.

Hey SIGMan, don't they have a Gander Mtn up around where your at? They also have a Cabela's around Buda, but I can't remember where that's at on the map.

I know that the Gander Mtn down the road from where I work at here in Houston had a few 45-70 Marlins and a Winchester 450 Timber carbine. The carbine has left the building, unfortunately...but I am uncertain of the 45-70's...I think I need to check that out. :)

BTW, they weren't stainless...not sure if your set on that.

The last Market Hall Gun & Knife show I went to had 1 $500+ but that was a
few months ago..... :uhoh:

You're starting to scare me because I was going to use my tax return to pick
one up to complement my BFR. I'm still kicking myself for not getting the one
I saw a few years ago in the low $400s.

I did not think to call Gander Mtn, I will do that when they open.

I do need stainless for the conversion I want to do so that might be the issue.
None of the places I called had blue either, but that just may be a local issue.

Thanks for the tip on Gander.

Cabelas did not have one.

Did you try Academy or Sportsman's Warehouse?

Ok, sorry for reviving the old dead thread.

That said, I was cruising for info on .45-70s and came across this one. I found it interesting because long after this thread ran it's course, I bought a big marlin from the OP. Evidently you didn't find your target, Richard?

But yes, doesn't do a lot of good in Texas.....
I was cruising on 1171 across the top of the metroplex last week on a trip out to Cableas to pick up some more of their bulk ammo cans when I happened to see a F150 get totalled. By what you may be asking? Well, by the Feral Hog that jumped out of the brush on the side of the road and made a failed bid at crossing the street. Probably in the 450lb range, jet black. This would be two weeks after I saw a family group in beside a tree line near 190 and Plano rd over in Richardson.

The hogs have made it into the urban parts of the Metroplex. You now have a reason to get a .45-70.

The .45-70 is an awesome bullet. the rifle is capable of killing any thing anything in north America with ease. I have used mine to take white tail, some say it is over kill, but I have never had a dear so much as run a few feet after being hit in the vitals. I have also taken elk and black bear with similar results.

As for penetration, a dumpster is thin sheet steel, these rounds can go clean through an American buffalo at 150 yards, a dumpster is a piece of cake.

I have several rifles in 45-70. It is my absolute favorite. I compete with it. To me, there is no better cartridge. Load that cartridge with the holy black and let a few rounds go. You can't see sh*t, but there is nothing more fun, IMHO.
