I have a bunch of berrys 350 grain plated bullets for a 45-70,anyone shooting these with trail boss?

I bought some to try in my .458 Win Mag with Trail Boss, but my seater was too tight for them. Dang it.

I had emailed Berrys about the velocity it could take and this is the reply I got.

It was designed for velocities up to 2000fps for the 45-70.

Sincerely,
Jay R. Phillips
Berry's MFG

Since Trail Boss was only going to push it to around 1150 to 1200 FPS in the .458 case, it could have worked.

I have run 405 grain cast with trail boss that shot pretty decent, I'm sure the Berry bullets would do well too. I would think somewhere around 12.0 grains would be a nice comfortable shooting load. I would suggest magnum primers, trail boss when used with large case capacities tends to not burn completely and the magnum primers help. I have also drilled out flash holes on .308 cases when loading trail boss for subsonic loads to help with powder ignition.

The Berry's plated 350 gr. .45-70 bullet has proven to be very accurate in both of my .45-70's, using both IMR 3031 and TrailBoss. For full power loads, I use the IMR 3031, and for fun plinking loads, it's the TrailBoss.

Hope this helps.

Loaded these exact bullets

With 40.0 grains of IMR 3031.

Scored cloverleaf groups at 50 yards with the factory tang peep sight on my H&R Repo 1873 Springfield trapdoor.

In fact I loaded 4 batches, one at 40 grains, then 41 grains, 42 grains and then 43 grains. All cloverleafs, only difference was the groups migrated left to right across the target as the load increased. No chrono, but very mild shooting compared to Remington factory 300 grain HP I used to shoot in same rifle.

Definitely will load again!

I've tried Trailboss in the 45/70 but w/cast bullets & not plated. I don't know velocity but it makes the Ruger #1 very easy to shoot for plinking loads. The big holes are the 45/70, the little ones are a 32mag. I shot these a while back and don't remember the particulars, I think the distance was about 25-30 yards, free hand w/a weaver K4 scope. The bullet is a gascheck RCBS 325gr.
