New member. I have two 45-70 single shot rifles. A synthetic stock NEF, and a Wichester 1885 short rifle. Enyoy both of them. They are my favorite rifles out of a battery of 15 or so.
I have a Ruger #1 in 45-70. It will do a good job on game-I've used it on deer and hogs. The tracking job (IF one is needed!) will be both short and easy to follow.
Welcome to another 45-70 afficianado. There is something about that hugh case with up to a 500 gr or so bullet. If it can't be stopped with a 45-70, it's time for air support.
I'm a big fan of the .45-70 as well. I have a 16" barrel chambered in that caliber for my T/C Contender and I have a Marlin Guide Gun as well. Firing either is more like initiating a launch!
I haven't fired a 45-70 rifle yet but I recently fired a 45-70 pistol. That was a hoot! After that I did a little research on the round and was very impressed with the incredible energy it delvers to a target. I think I want to play around with this round myself. I was thinking about a rifle/pistol combo, probably a lever action.
But keep in mind that beyond a couple hundred yards the trajectory is more like artillery than modern rifle rounds.

I like the NEF Handi Rifles also. I have two. The one in the picture is a .30-06. I have killed 10 deer and 1 coyote with it with 11 shots. The other is synthetic stocked. I have two barrels for it, a .357 magnum and a .50 caliber muzzleloader. I have killed two deer with the muzzleloader.
