Anyone have a load for 230gr lead round nose cast bullets using titegroup? I can only find data for copper jacket 230gr bullets with titegroup. Is it possible to just substitute a cast bullet for a jacked bullet in the reloading data? I didn't think so, because the pressure might be different.

Anyway I was thinking of starting wit 4.4grns of titegroup and setting the oal to about 1.2, any other ideas?

Mike, you're correct in thinking that you just can't substitute a lead bullet into a jacketed load. When using lead bullets, the powder charge will have to be reduced somewhat. I haven't used Titegroup, so I really couldn't say what a good starting point would be - hopefully someone here will have a good idea for ya.

As far as OAL goes, I've found the best feeding ammo in my 1911-A1 run in the 1.25" to 1.26" range ---------- usually 1.258".

Hard cast or swaged?

I know you said cast, but I wanted to understand for sure.

What barrel length(s)?

I don't have years of reloading experience, but have been doing it for a while and I chronograph every load I produce (several rounds shot over the Chrony before going back inside and loading more).

I use TG as well as Red Dot and Clays. My Lyman manual is at home but when I get off work I can see what I've been loading. I seem to recall 5.0 grains TiteGroup over a 230-gr swaged Hornady bullet with a Lee FCD crimp, but out of a 4" and a 5" barrel the velocities were fairly low (a mild target load for sure).

I was surprised that the difference between a 4" and 5" .45ACP showed only about 30'-35' per second difference. 765-fps and 730-fps average.

Here's the thread I started stating that exact load and velocities.

Try anywhere from 5.0 to 5.5 Grs. of W231 with a 230 Gr. lead bullet and it will shoot very well. :)

Tightgroup will do OK, it won't give top velocities. I don't care for it, although it is economical.

W231 is proven to give excellent results with lead bullets in almost any .45.

I'm using hard cast lead bullets, round nose type. I should have purchased w-231 but stupidly I went with the titegroup. The pistol is a colt commander sized 1911. So it has a 4 inch barrel.

I would go buy different powder but I live out in the sticks.

Anyway, I phoned Hodgdon, and a guy said to load between 4 and 4.8 grains of titegroup for that weight cast bullet.

Titegroup works just fine

I use it right now and it shoots clean. Can't comment on how it affects recoil but it doesn't bother me. The Lyman 48th edition reloading handbook manual says that for a 225 grain LRN you should use and OAL of 1.272. Suggested starting load for Titegroup is 4.5 grains and should produce 735 FPS @ 11,200 CUP. Max load is 5.1 grains and should produce 841 FPS @ 16,100 CUP. Test firearm was their universal receiver with a 5 inch barrel with 1 in 16 twist and .450 groove diameter.
