45 ACP Encore (Rifle)

Call Ramshot and get some of the original "Enforcer" data they put out early on. It showed very impressive velocities.
Their v.2 data sheet shows 1025 FPS with a 230 Gr. XTP loaded at 1.230 O.A.L. at 19,516 PSI from a 4" barrel ! Their start load went 938 FPS !
I here they will give this data out, but don't publish it anymore.
Another powder around that burn rate that may do well with a long barrel is AA #9. Might try it. AA #7 shows some pretty good velocities.
I know Blue Dot can give some impressive velocity in a Carbine, having tried it.

First of all, you don't need to use any different powders in an 18 inch barrel than you would in a handgun length barrel. The powder, whether slow or fast, is used up in the first few inches of the barrel anyway. It's a myth that you have to use fast powder in a short barrel and vice versa though it seems logical intuitively.
Secondly, don't use rifle primers in 45 ACP cases. You don't need them with any powder you might try in such a small case. They probably won't quite fit flush with the case head since pistol primer cups aren't quite as thick as rifle primer cups and will cause premature high pressure in such a small case. They will also worsen accuracy in all likelihood.

thanks for the feedback- I was hoping to use some slower powders than the ones mentioned along the lines of Lil gun. Some similiar size cases/ bore ratio like 44/40 list lil gun as an option.

I'm certain the 45 ACP case can safely operate well above standard auto pistol pressures in a bolt or rolling block action. I emailed some of the powder companies like Hodgdon for some feed back.
A search on this site revealed some others have tried lilgun and longshot in bolt actions but ofcourse the charges were deleted. I think either powder should get a 230 grain bullet safely in the 1400-1600fps range. Thanks--Tom

It's true you could load a 45 ACP case to higher pressure in an Encore than you could in a semi auto pistol. If you push it too far, you will have pierced primers which, among other things, isn't good for the firing pin. I would also be EXTREMELY surprised if powder companies give you any loads that aren't already in their manuals.
I doubt you're going to break any ground that someone hasn't attempted to break before. The advantage of the 45 ACP in an Encore is low recoil. You can only push loads so far and accuracy will begin to suffer. If you want a lot more velocity, you should either have the barrel rechambered or sell it and buy something you'll be happy with.

You would need to buy some Super brass, but the outside size is the same so they would chamber in your T/C. I'm GUESSING the T/C is more than strong enough to handle them, but you should verify.

I did not think of that, not sure it's need in a fully supported chamber like an encore but could have real value in my Beretta carbine if I could find a stiffer spring.
The load data is very good, looks like +P loads on crack. The above article had some nice historic infromation on 45 super and Midway has it for 22/100
