So I was reloading some 45 acp and I could not get a large pistol primer (Winchester WLP) to fit in the brass. Do they use a small pistol primer? Am I missing something?

While the majority of .45 brass uses large primers, some actually do use small primers. I don't have the breakdown of brands, but if you had a list to check headstamps, it would probably be quicker to just look at the primer pockets; that is what I do.

Will a small pistol primer fit?
yes 45acp comes in large pistol primers and the pain in the a** small pistol primers. If the large pistol primers don't fit then yes you put in small pistol primers just like a 9mm

My question was for the OP, as it is the simplest way for him to answer his own question. I understand there are SP .45 brass, and have some, separated out so it doesn't get in the mix.

I will try the small pistol primers next time I do a batch of 45 on the Hornady brass. I was mainly curious if other had run into this with certain 45 brass.

I don't know which makes use it these days, and have only picked up a few SP .45 brass at the range. I haven't really paid any attention to that detail. Too bad they didn't switch 40 years ago.

I used to have all LP 45 brasses, but with range pick-ups, I now have a bunch of SP brasses mixed in. At first, I was visually separating them prior to priming. But since I use a hand primer (RCBS Posi-Prime), I just start with the LP primers and go from one brass to the next. No more visual separations.

If the LP primer stops dead on insertion, then it's a SP brass, and it simply gets tossed into another tray for priming with SP primers.

By their feel, they all seem to perform about the same, although I've never chronied them.

Speer/CCI Blazer, Federal, Fiocchi USA, GFL, Winchester and others have started to use small primers for 45ACP.

Interesting thing I found is when a batch lot of Tula SP primers with harder cup wouldn't ignite consistently, they ignited 100% when used in 45ACP cases with SP primer pockets shot in Sig/SA/RIA 1911s, M&P45, PT145 (When life throws you lemons, you make lemonade :D) - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=7840156#post7840156

SP 45ACP loads will produce lower muzzle velocities than LP 45ACP loads using the same powder charge so you may need to increase powder charge if using lighter target loads. Starline has an article that lists comparative SP vs LP load velocities - http://www.starlinebrass.com/articles/Small-Primer-vs-Large-Primer/

If having to deal with .45 ACP cases with small pistol primer pockets is a problem...Send them to me. They make very good range brass for plucking and practice.

I have quite few different brands that use SPP. It's been years that these are around. I think the first were the lead-safe 45s from Federal, again years ago.

Small pistol primers in 45 ACP are only a problem to those that do not inspect their brass prior to reloading. With a very small amuont of practice, a small primer pocket can be identified quickly with just a glance.....

I switched over to SPP in 45 a while ago. I got tiered of stocking 2 different size handgun primers and switch the Dillon over every time I wanted to load 45's.
