At the range I'm beginning to see more and more .45 ACP cases that have the small primer pocket & primer. Is the trend for all manufacturers to be making these eventually? Does anyone know the reasoning behind this? I haven't found any reloading data for these cases. Are the primers small pistol, small pistol magnum, small rifle?

No difference in loading data. SPs seem to do the job as well as LPs in 45acp cases. It is irritating to find SPs mixed in with LPs, though. Stops my rhythm while loading on my turret press. I can see them being a problem for sure if using a progressive press.

The primers are small pistol.
The reason for the switch is the new non toxic priming compound is more powerful than the old type, so smaller amount is needed and it fits in small primers better.
Load data is the same as large primers.
If the new compound catches on with all other manufactures it will likely mean all or most cases will be made with small pockets.

Jmorris, that is awesome. I have to depend on the sixth sense in my right arm to determine sticky primer pocket vs. small primer hole.

I sort them out as I find them. So far, all the SP .45 brass I've found in my range pickups has been Federal, so that makes it rather easy to sort. I just put it aside, and I'll hold onto it until I have enough to bother changing my routine to load, or to trade for LP.

Whether the trend goes to small primer brass for the 45 ACP is entirely up to the brass manufacturers. For me there is no difference as I inspect all my brass before processing and I just toss the small primed cases into a different pile. When I get enough to make it worth while, I'll reload them using the same data as my large primed brass...

I have found CCI Blazer and Federal SP .45 cases. (there may be more) I do not know if it is true but one reason I heard was that there was a small cost savings by using SP primers.
One thing to remember from the manufactures standpoint is a small savings * a large number of rounds does add up.

I sort them out them out and load them the same except for the primer.

Also the Winchester NT brass is made for small primers as well.
