The Shadow Knows...
For the record I am a 1911 and .45 nut!

I shot a skunk today, hit it at about 30 yards with 230gr FMJ- The round struck the rump and was followed by a straight stream of yellow stink that stretched what seemed like 15 feet (all take note of range:eek:) He didn't die! He started hobbling away... I walked up within 10 or 15 yards and shot him again, a hit, he still didn't die... He just laid there, writhing in pain. I got up close and shot him in the head to put him out of his misery...

3 230 grain shots- I guess stopping power comes in the way of a HP

Just passing on the info-:scrutiny:

I once shot a raccoon 3 times with a JHP 240 .44 mag Model 94 Winchester. He finally died.

I have a feeling, like my raccoon, your skunk would have died soon after the first shot.

I shot a deer with my 8mm mag. He ran 25 yds. up a hill. The bullet blew his lungs and hart apart.

You shot him in the rump and expected the shot to kill him? That only works when their heads are up their rear ends. ;)

Your forgot to read him the facts on stopping power

I used to shoot junk yard dogs near my home.
Placement is more important then size.

...and in the meantime, my Kahr PM9 killed a deer with one shot after I struck it with my car.

1 124 Gr JHP and a 2000 lb Buick moving at 60 MPH - DRT.

That's why I carry a 9mm. I believe in shot placement over caliber.

I've shot a few skunks and possums over the last 17 years living out here in the country. I've used everything from .22lr to .40s&w. When animals get shot, no matter what the bullet size, it seems like they will find a way to run as long as you haven't hit them directly in the brain.

It must be instinct. Animals aren't consciously aware that they've been shot by a bullet. As long as they are physically able to move, they will try and run in order to survive. However, hit them in the brain or spine and they aren't going anywhere.

Again, a 9mm placed in the head or chest is 100x more effective than a .45 in the stomach.

Ah, yes. But a 45acp in the head or chest is much more effective than a 9mm in the stomach!

Your assertation about shot placement is dead on, literally. The caliber isn't as important.

I've shot at least 30 deer at work over the past 11 years that have been injured in accidents. It amazes me their will to survive. I've used my previous issue 9mm 124 gr Gold Dot, current issued 40 165 gr Gold Dot, Remington reduced recoil 12 guage and Federal V shock 55gr 223. Shot placement and the rifle is king. I usually shoot for the head and am ribbed by my co-workers for my seat of the pants ballistic testing. In April I shot a 100 pound doe in the top of the head half way between the ears and eys from about 15 feet with my 40 cal. The deer kicked for almost a minute, which seems like forever when you have 4 lanes of traffic stopped and 50 cars watching you. The first week of May I took almost the exact same shoot with my M16A1 from about 30 yards (deer kept crawling away as I walked up) With the 223, the impact blew the right eyeball out of the socket and the deer kick once and died. I've seen officers blast away with none vital shots while the animal just tries to crawl away. David

It's simple

Animals have not watched the correct Hollywood movies that would teach them that they should fly off their feet and die quickly when they are shot. It's just a lack of education....;)

Animals do not have as sophisticated a nervous system/brain as humans, and do not react to "shock" the way SOME humans do. It's even hit or miss with humans. Are they drugged, feeling no pain, have higher tolerances, or just lay down and die like some do? You never know what you are going to get......

+1

Try killing a possum some time.
Short of blowing them apart, it ain't gonna happen till they leak to death.

Amen to that! The dumbest possum I ever killed had the misfortune of climbing into an empty garbage can in my garage. After figuring out what was making all the noise, I put the barrel of Ruger 10/22 against the center of his skull and pulled the trigger. Still took him three minutes to stop thrashing.

There are those who have been shot with 44 magnum and didn't die with one shot. There are those that were shot with a 22 and died almost instantly with 1 shot. That's why I carry my Sig P220 45acp (It's one of the best guns in the world). I carry it in the winter months. In the summer months, I carry my Walther or FEG 32acp. And I feel equally safe with both calibers; because I know that a 1 shot stop is not a guarantee, and that a 32acp can do the job just like a 45acp. If you know how to shoot; remain calm; and take control of the situation. And I definitely don't need a 15 round magazine of 9mm. Actually, I never need a 9mm, 10mm, or 40sw.

rcmodel,

Your right ! I shot a rabid opossum 6 times with a .22 , 6 times with a .38, then went back inside the house and got the AK........ well , you get the idea. He finally passed on.

Hello: My name is U.S.SFC_RET and I am a possum killer. Yes rcmodel it takes alot to kill a possum. To give testimony. 6 shots from a high powered 22lr to send the critter thrashing. Not easy to dispatch, not at all.

I once had to shoot a blackbird 3 times with my Daisy BB gun, those things are tuff!!!! Sorry, couldn't resist...ha.

Put a hook through a fish's lip, and it will pull against you with all it's might.

Put a hook through my lip, and you could lead me around on a string.

Well said Hank, well said.

One time I shot an elephant with my .22 win mag and its head flew off.

I saw my brother once...

slaughter a chicken by chopping the head off the body and the headless chicken was running like crazy for the whole 5mins. :what: Now thats stopping power than anything else.
