Just got some bullets in from Beartooth. Put some loads together. Some are a bit hot. I have a Rossi Puma '92. Information I have is that this gun will take a pretty good load. Not sure if these loads really exceed the published data, because I got the 340 gr from an article, not from published data. I had no troubles, and no indications of over pressure.

Shooting from a 20" octagonal barrel. 50 degrees outside. Club chrono at about 10-12 ft from the muzzle.

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DUPLICATE THE DESCRIBED LOADS without first working them up from a published safe starting level charge while watching for pressure signs. If you don't know how to do that, don't try.

I would suggest working up a load with 4227. We always had better results using it over the 2400 with the heavier bullets.
That 300gr round looks pretty good considering it's loaded with the same charge (17.5gr) as the 340 gr bullet. That should be a good load out of a rifle. The .45 Colt brass is plenty strong.

Thanks for the suggestion. I used the 2400 because I had almost a full bottle, and the Oregon Laser Cast manual had 15.2 gr on a 300 gr bullet as their listed max. One of the articles I have from another reloader went up to 18 gr 2400, so I stayed just under that for this run.

I bought the gun last April, loaded some of my pistol rounds like the 6.3 Red Dot for it and fooled around on the pistol range with it. Tore my knee up in August, had surgery and just coming off the rehab/pain meds. I decided to stay away from guns and reloading while taking any narcotics.

Just put a Marbles tang sight on it, need a taller front post. Looking at Marbles gold bead, or (gasp) fiber optic.

My friend at the club was skeptical about a short lever gun. He is 60 and said he'd never shot a Winchester lever gun!!! I let him run a few through on the chrono, and then some more on paper at 50 yards. He seemed to like it.

I have guns that will shoot one hole groups at 100 yards all day. Something about this older technology is getting my interest. The guy that runs the black powder shoots at our club was hanging around while we were shooting. Probably should put some Tripple 7 in some loads and show up with the muzzle loaders!
