.45 Colt for SD: JHP, FMJ, LFN, JSP

I purchased a Charter Arms Bulldog in 44 Special in the 1980's. Mine has the three inch barrel. There is no way you are going to get the velocities up to have reliable bullet expansion. Not without bulging the cylinder and possibly blowing the top strap. There are clear limitations to light weight, portable, big bore revolvers. I would shoot a soft lead bullet. If it makes you feel good, a soft lead hollow point might expand, a little bit.
 
I would go with the Hornady Critical Defense if the accuracy is acceptable. I have shot a few HCD from my Bond Arms Rowdy, but never did any kind of reaction testing.
