.45 Colt load

Hello;

I have been thinking about trying a load as follows:

Starline brass
CCI 300 primer
240 grain XTP HP bullet
Start at 7.0 grains of Unique

Does anyone see anything wrong with trying this?
I haven't found anything exactly like this in my reloading material.
Any advise would be appreciated.

That looks ok but are those XTP's cannelured? .452 diameter, I use Nosler bullets on my Long Colts. I just don't remember the XTP's @ .452 diameter.

7 grains of Unique should be good, I usually shoot around there somewhere

The only thing I see wrong is, Hornady doesn't make a 240 grain XTP, except in .44 cal.

The one for .45 colt is a 250 grain.
The ones for .45 ACP is a 230 grain.

8.0 grains Unique will give you a very good safe load in any modern .45 Colt revolver.
I use 8.5 in my Colt SAA's.

Yes they are cannelured. I would be shooting them in my Ruger OMV and Colt SAA.
The Colt is a new one.

You *may* have trouble getting enough tension to hold the bullet tight. If so, you can "neck size" your .45 Colt brass using a .45 ACP die, or the base of a .30-06 or .270 or .308 (etc) rifle die. They end up looking kind of like .44-40's when you are done.

If you have a 240 grain .45 XTP, it is the #45220 XTP-MAG bullet designed for the 454 Casull. It has a very heavily constructed jacket in keeping with the intended magnum velocity.

It will not expand at standard .45 Colt velocity.

So would you be just wasting your money shooting this bullet from your colt?
I have always used the 250 XTP, have looked at the 240's but never bought them.

Would all the heavy weight bullets from Hornady in.45 with magnum in the listing be more for the .454? Not so much for the .45colt.

Yes.
They are intended to hold together and expand at .454 Casull/.460 S&W & high end "Ruger only" velocity.

You can't push them fast enough to expand reliably at standard .45 Colt pressure in a .45 Colt SAA, Colt SAA clone, or S&W 625.

Thanks, I have a Ruger .454 heading my way. Got it off Gun Broker. Looking to get a few supply's, and had seen the 240gr loads last year and did not understand why the 240's were mag and the 250's not. I see they have the 300's in both.
All I hunt is deer, I know the .454 is a little over kill, but I have two sons that love the hand cannons.

Can a gas check be added to a bullet, or would it be best being molded on?

All XTP bullets are fully jacketed hollow-points.

SO, no you can't add a gas check.
The gliding metal full jacket is a better gas check then a gas check on a lead bullet.

I prefer to stick to cast bullets at standard pressures in the .45Colt. Cheaper and more effective.

It is really hard to beat a 250 grain Keith SWC cast bullet over 8.5 Unique in a Colt SAA.

There just isn't enough velocity there to depend on JHP expansion to happen.

+1. Am presently working with Vern Humphrey from this site, on load development with cast 268gr hollowpoint Keith bullets for the .45 Colt. We have found a good alloy, and Vern reports excellent mushrooming at standard .45 Colt velocities. Hope to post a full report on THR sometime this Spring.

It is really hard to beat a 250 grain Keith SWC cast bullet over 8.5 Unique in a Colt SAA.

I don't know about beating it, but 10.5 gr of AA5 under a 200 gr Cowboy#4 from MBC sure works for me!
