.45 Colt The Easy Way?

I seem to be shooting a lot of .45 Colt these days. My load is 6grn of Red Dot under any bullet of 255 or less.

My usual bullet is the Lyman Keith bullet. I use the Lee tumble lube method, and Lee sizing dies too. That's the way I started 20 years ago, and stuck with it.

I use the Lee 230grn TL round nose for .45 ACP and it works great there. A key is the fact that it's sooooooo easy to prepare. Cast them and tumble lube. No sizing needed.

Sometimes I use this same bullet for .45 Colt, just because it's so easy. Accuracy seems to be fine. The only issue is that I have to take care with the OAL, or they're too long for my Colt. Other than that, they seem great. It's so easy, it almost feels like cheating.

Has anyone else used this bullet in .45 Colt? What have your results been?

I had to use up some 230 grain rn bullets a while back,and they shot fine in my .45colt revolver.The steel targets didn't know the difference.

I think I used an acp crimp die to taper crimp it into place instead of my usual roll crimp.

heck,if they save ya time and aggravation,why fight it????

They should shoot fine. I tried some Red Dot in the .45 Colt some years back and liked it. Fills the case better than most and burns clean.

A few years ago, gun writer Mike Ventinuro wrote a few articles praising Red Dot as a very accurate powder for .45 Colt loads. Never tried it myself but have loaded a bunch of 230 gr cast bullets with Unique or Universal Clays powders.

I heard from an old timer that 6gr of Red Dot with a 250gr bullet was always "THE RECIPE" for the 45 colt.

I've been loading mine with 7.2 grains of red dot behind a 230 grain fmj.
