I am looking at a new medium or large revolver and I like moonclips. I already have a 9mm sp101. .45 acp would be fine, but it is chambered usually in guns capable of 45colt or 44 magnum, and in tha frame, .45 acp is very outgunned. is .45super safe in thes guns? I am thinking about the smith nframe and the taurus tracker, Both of which now are chambered in .44 magnum, so the frame should be strong enough. What about the cylInders? Thanks.
P.S. The 610 I was looking at got sold! Waited too long.

I just recently bought a pre-25 45acp S&W. It is a beautiful 1950's bullseye gun but what really really struck me was how THIN the steel on the cylinder walls was. I guess I have gotten used to the N frames 357/38's like my Registered Magnum and 38/44 collection.

If it were me (and in my case it is) there is no way in HECK I would push much beyond normal pressure 45acp out of a pre-25.

Sure the frame is strong enough, but when you compare the amount of metal around a 44mag cylinder to a 45acp cylinder, you might have second thoughts about +P!

JUST MY OPINION, NO FLAMES PLEASE!

I don't think the Taurus Tracker .45ACP will handle .45 Super. Taurus Trackers are not chambered in .44mag, those are the Taurus Raging Bull guns which are a little heavier.

I have a Taurus .45ACP and it is a pretty powerful, and fun gun.

The 44 Magnum Tracker will be available in the summer of 04, according to the Taurus website, and I am looking forward to that offering. I see it as a great (hot) 44 Special with the capability of 44 Mag loads, much like the Model 19 S&W (practice with 38's and shoot a frew 357's) was presented when new.

I have both a 2" and a 4" Tracker in 45ACP, as well as a 4" 357, and they are all great guns. I have not tried any "hot" loads in the 45's, but I am very happy with the performance with any number of commercial 45ACP loads.

IF I wanted to try 45 Super, I would work up to it very slowly using good reloading technique and watching for signs of excessive pressure. The proper brass, and small increases in powder quantitiy with comparative measuring of brass and examination of primer pockets, etc. I certainly would not use commercial (or full power handloads) in 45 Super and try it in the gun. I think the gun would show increased wear very quickly if fed a steady diet of such fare, even if it proved to be safe.

If anyone has tried "hot" 45 ACP or 45 Super loads in a Tracker, I would be very interested in hearing about those experiences. If it is safe, occaisional use of such ammo would increase the versatility of a Tracker, but even if such use is never in the future of my Trackers, I still find them to be very useful and a lot of fun to shoot.

45+

When I ran 45 Super in my 1911, I ended up using the 45 Super as a +P+ load. Not quite full power but better than +p. I was getting about 1000 fps with a 225gr hard cast bullet. That was plenty to take care of business.
