Several years ago, I had the unpleasant experience of shooting a .454 Casull from a 6 inch single action. After one round, I decided I didn't want one.

Recently, I shot a Ruger .454 Super Redhawk double action with 9 1/2 inch barrel. I bought one the next day!

Am currently working up a load with the 300 GR Speer Gold Dot to 1500 FPS. It kicks, but it's controllable and acurate.

I won't be shooting 300-350 rounds in an afternoon like I do with my various 9MM weapons, but a box of 50 is no big deal.

I LIKE 1T!!!! hehehehehe

Chey ... I think the long tube helps quite a bit. I had thought of getting a magnaport job done - but cannot justify the cost .. it is well manageable. I daresay for me, 20 rounds of the Hornady 300 grain (1800 ft lb) loads is ''enough'' for one session tho!

Still like the Raging Bull tho as well ... and that is effectively only 6" tube but ... the gun does have quite significant mass. Ruger wins tho in the popularity stakes! Enjoy!!!

I have for many years suffered from quite severe ''handcannonitis''.! :p :D

I first range trip with my 7.5" SRH was a hoot - there's NOTHING like touching off these babies! :) Got Wildalaska looking for a scope - I want the Burris 1.5-4x with Posi-Lock. :)

A couple of questions for those of you who have more experience with the .454 than I do.l
1. I notice that after about 20-25 rounds, the SRH trigger guard starts to "bite" my second finger. Do any of you have aftermarket grips that cure this problem? (I already use PAST shooting gloves, and it still happens.)

2. What kinds of 2X to 2.5X scopes will stand up under the punishment of this kind of recoil?

All assistance GREATLY appreciated.

I shot a Freedom Arms with a 7.5" barrel... Not sure of the load but they were heavy bullets. It wasn't as uncomfortable as a 3" Smith 629... At least with loads he had.

But I guess I'm a whimp... I only put 5 rounds through it. :p

I honestly don't know how those guys can shoot those 4.5" 500 Linebaughs.

I just bought a Raging Bull 454 yesterday. I have never shot a 454. Only fired a 44 Mag once and that was years ago. I am used to shooting 9mm, 40, and 45.

Does one feel more recoil or muzzle flip with a 454 Casull? I know both are going to be more pronounced compared to lesser everyday calibers, but what is the biggest characteristic to expect from a 454 round?

I am just trying to figure out what exactly to expect when I am finally able to save up enough money to buy a 454 round and fire it??

Cratz,

I agree. anyone who can handle a 4.5 inch Linebaugh, or even a 3 inch 629, is a tougher man than I am!

Lightsped,

With a DA revolver, it feels to me like a backward push (Jolt?) rather than an upwards flip. Get some ammo, and enjoy!

but what is the biggest characteristic to expect from a 454 round?
Lightsped - I doubt really there is any one special ''characteristic'' .... it is just bigger!!

There is tho much difference between various loads .. for instance, if you shoot the Winchester 250 grain JHP .. I doubt it'll be perceived as much more than a stout .44 mag ... and that round is only about 900 and some ft lbs.

OTOH ... load up with my fave .. 300 grn Hornady XTP ... THEN you know something is going on!! That sucker develops over 1800 ft lbs!

The gun tho, going by feel of my Raging Lunatic .. will essentially kick back into your hand and also rise .. but IMO you want to have a grip that lets that rise happen ... it helps dissipate the energy better.

Biggest downside is ammo cost .. at near a Buck a pop ... but get some brass collected and then reload . I am about to get started on that using cast SWC's with gas checks.

Welcome to the ''Cannon club''!:D

The "Cannon Club", I like the sound of that. :)

How about a newbiee question? Where exactly does the "454" number come from? Are we talking some kind of weight or diameter of the round or something?

Where exactly does the "454" number come from?
Ya know, despite reading around I cannot remember why that was chosen. The bullet dia itself is as per 45 acp, 45Colt .... .452.

Dick Casull began his dev of this cal pretty much as a wildcat IIRC - back in 50's - and maybe was planning on that as the actual cal ... changed it a bit to suit .45LC and it ''stuck''! Maybe someone else can explain that one.

''Cannon Club'' .. hmmm, maybe we need a graphic .. have think on that!:)

How did you get the inside of your barrel so clean?!?

But yeah, that logo looks good to me. Now if we can get the THR gods to give us our own forum.... :p

How did you get the inside of your barrel so clean?!?
Well, I took that shot when the number of rounds fired was still very modest ... and the bit of copper fouling seemed to clean up quite easily. It's the .44 mag SRH.

Since then, that tube has seen quite a few more rounds! And probably would not shine up quite as bright again, tho still not bad. If you really want to see copper fouling at it's best ... you need to see the .454 SRH tube after the hot Hornady loads .... now that is a different matter!:p
