My buddy has a .454 Casull in SRH and we are always looking for cost effective ways to get some .454 rounds without reloading...so I typed .454 Casull ammunition into Froogle and up popped Magtech .454 Casull SJSP 260 gr at 1800 fps @ $11.28 for 20 rounds from Midway USA. SCORE! That is about the best price I have ever seen for the big boys.

He likes shooting 260 gr Winchester Supremes (JHP) but they are closer to $30 for 20 rounds.

Has anyone had any experience with the Magtech in .454? My friend and I have both shot Magtech cowboy loads in our respective guns (Blackhawk for me and SRH for him) and they have always been reliable.

The first box of MagTech 260gr .454's I tried, ~3.5 years ago, occasionally stuck in my 7.5" SRH's cylinder bores, albeit not as tenaciously as the first two boxes of Hornady's. Hornady admitted their problem was using softer brass for the reloadind folk - remedied by '01 and later lots. The last two boxes of MagTech were fine... and, frugal! My greatest accuracy, 1.5 inch 5-shot (I allow one flyer!) groups at 50yd from sandbags and using a 2x28mm scope, has been with the Hornady 240gr XTP's.

My favorite plinkers for my .454 now employ the old .454 cases with 7 gr TiteGroup and 250gr LRNFP - actually hits ~950 fps (similar to the original BP .45 Colt loads). It hits close enough to POA with those 240gr Hornady XTP's that I can still ring the 12" plate at 110yd, too. Additionally, the SRH with those 'Cowboy loads' eats up the recoil - and doesn't require careful chamber brushing, a la the .45 Colts, before full-house .454's are fired.

I bought a case of .44's from Magtech and they worked just fine. The brass reloads nicely too. Now, if your friend is going to reload for the .454, just buy the components. They're a lot cheaper separately than together.

No reloading just yet, so cost effective loaded ammo is about the only way to go for now.
