I am interested in the 458, but I am having difficulty finding the barrel to build around. Maybe you who have built them could chime in, please?
I'm getting a barrel from McGowen for the bolt action 458 SOCOM that I'm going to build.I know there are several guy's that have built them, but getting the round to feed reliable might be a little challenging with some bolt action magazines.
I've tested the cartridges in my Savage 10FCP with a factory drop magazine, and it doesn't work at all.But they do feed pretty good with my Savage 12 with a blind magazine, but the feed lips will need a little bending. These are both center feed 308 magazines.
I tried them in my Savage 12 223 with staggered feed blind mag,and the cartridges just pop out,and if the feed lips were adjusted, the rounds probably wont feed by the looks of it.
I wanted to put a 10rd drop mag bottom metal kit on this new rifle, but will probably just stick with the blind mag setup, and be stuck with having a 3 rd capacity-2 in the mag,and 1 in the pipe.

what about 450 Bushmaster. With 2012 rules of increase case length it comes into play. Any thoughts?

.450 Bushy is legal for 2012.

And you can use cheaper pistol bullets (like the 300gr XTP-Mag) for reloading. But the factory load is the a pointy nose bullet from Hornady.

I built a .358 WSSM on a Savage 11 WSM donor rifle. .358's built on a shortened WSM will be coming soon too.

The .358 WSSM duplicates .358 Winchester handloads (same exact case capacity). I'm exceeding factory 200gr Winchester Silvertip ammo (I'm getting 2525 fps with w/ 200gr Interlock).

The new .358 WSM 1.8" cartridges will be meeting or exceeding the .35 Whelen and the .350 Rem Mag. One in particular (the .358 Grant 1.8") is already exceeding the .35 Whelen, and it's pushing 225gr bullets out the nozzle at the same speed as the .338 Win Mag.

The .358 WSSM is plenty for me. Muzzle energy and recoil matches the .30-06.

And they shoot a lot flatter than the .458 SOCOM or the .450 Bushmaster.

thanks. I am looking at the 450 Bush for a light, "carbine like" AR deer gun.

I have traditionally used shotgun, then 44 lever action ruger, just looking for something with more range than 44 and significantly ighter than my 1187.
