Howdy folks,
This may be a silly question but I must ask. I'm considering getting an AR-15 in .458 SOCOM. Would this cartridge be over-powered for HD? I'd be using it in a house with a decent sized yard. There would be 2-3 children and Mrs. Aaryq.

get the right load for it and it might be great. i don't know anything though, don't listen to me. it would be overpowered in my place

not sure of exactly what it would do to them, but I'm sure they'd be wishing they hadn't done what they did in the moments leading up to them getting shot.

458 SOCOM should be great in the subsonic loading. 500-600gn bullet at 1050 fps. What's not to like?

You're contemplating a round that was designed compensate for the 5.56 NATO cartridge's lack of penetration. This round will probably penetrate a brick wall and couple neighboring houses in your subdivision.

It's like the .88 magnum that shoots through schools.

I'd personally suggest a German Shepherd Dog for home protection outside of what you already have behind your nightstand.

Nothing wrong with, although it is a bit heavy for HD use. I have a .50 Beowulf that can do double duty as my pig hunting gun and HD if required. I think something like a 325-400 gr. softpoint would be fine, although at 1900 FPS recoil is a bit stout for an HD gun.
