I'm looking to build an AR-15 chambered in .458 SOCOM. Where might I get a good price on a lower to start things off?

Spicer, may I ask why you want a .458 SOCOM? I have never known of anyone that desired to rechamber an AR for this round. Please do not misunderstand my inquiry. There is nothing wrong in desiring this or any other cartridge in my opinion. Heck, I have an interest in 4000 fps cartridges just because they travel so quickly. But I am interested in hearing why this unusual cartridge fascinates you. Thanks.

I want one too! I just can't decide which big bore AR cartridge I want; .458 SOCOM, .45 Bushmaster, .50 Beowulf, .499 LW....decisions, decisions...

Currently I'm leaning toward the SOCOM :)

Whaa?
Lot's of interest in the .458. That's a nice thumper--I was thinking about either that or a beowulf a while back and seem to recall the .458 comparing favorably.

.458 SOCOM because you can't get an AR chambered in .45-70.:neener:

4000+ is velocity over mass. .458 is mass over velocity. Good for wild hogs and other large game close up. Also puts a damper on two-legged predators.

5 reasons
1. I want an evil rifle (all my other firearms are for hunting purposes)
2. I wanted a 45-70 levergun but this could be as effective as a camp gun.
3. I handload, and this cartridge leaves a wide variety of loads, including subsonic.
4. Its one step down from a 50 cal should a ban come into effect
5. Can switch uppers to .223 for blasting fun

Gifted, when I first heard of the .458 SOCOM, I wondered if some in the military wanted to return to the .45-70.;) Seriously, if I wanted to upgrade a .223 AR-15, then there are other cartridge choices. But the idea of a .40ish caliber round strikes me as odd for this particular rifle type. I am not opposed to the existence of these rounds, but it seems unusual for this specific platform. Anyway, keep us informed about how large rounds function in the AR.

Spicer, good reasons. Point 1 still has me chuckling. By the way, I am also a fan of the old .45-70 cartridge. Good luck with your project.

I hate to confess this, but I have not thought seriously about the proposed .50 caliber ban until I read Spicer's post. I hope those idiots are not thinking about applying it to muzzleloaders also. Since I intend to return to muzzleloading, I need to check on that proposed law. Thanks for the info.
