Getting ready for my first Big Bore AR.

I'm getting closer! Have handguard, barrel nut, gas block and tube on the way from Delta team tactical. Only missing item is the bolt.
I will either go the Brownell's route with whole carrier assembly , or if I find one that is reasonable, just the bolt alone and use an existing carrier. Delta team and I believe it was Arm or Ally had nice looking carrier assemblies as well.

Gunny, that is a sweet looking rifle, hope it shoots as good as it looks! And I love the muzzle brake, it reminds me of a warthog for some reason...

This Thursday I’ll bring it to Aklys Defense and Joe, Zack and I will test it to see how it preforms in recoil reduction. We’re going to shoot it with and without the break.
Like I said, it’s a prototype. If it works good Aklys May put it into production as a standard item.

I hope they do bring it out, it's a good lookin brake!

Agreed. I didn't see (feel) much change with the brake that was on my radical, but it vented to the sides only. Having some upwards venting should probably help some with muzzle jump.

Again Delta team tactical with super fast delivery. Was truly surprised at the quality of the Davidson Defense 15" handguard at only 54.99. Gas block may be a little tiny bit large, as it just contacts the hand guard at its highest point. Looking at what appears to be a slightly lower profile unit from Troy, if I cant get this one to clear. Used my Amazon points to get a Bushnell red dot and YHM riser. Closer still, just need the bolt!

I went to Aklys Defense yesterday. Joe put six rounds through the gun. Three without the brake and three with the brake. Due to the low muzzle pressure of the 458 the break didn’t reduce felt recoil, but it sure kept the muzzle from rising.
When I got home last night and took a good look at the hand rail, there was something that I just didn’t like about it. The barrel extended just passed the end of the rail and I didn’t like the look.

So I pulled the upper apart and put another rail on. This one is a Key Mod and a little slimmer. When I tried to put the rail on the bottom of the gas block set screws were hitting the rail. I took a fill and shaved the bottom o& 5he screws. This rail was slimmer. That gas block fit like a fat lady in a corvette.

With the different barrel nutset up, the rail fit better at the muzzle and looked much better.

And that big flat front on the muzzle break it can stand on it’s own..

Here is the almost complete .458 SOCOM. Delta team tactical barrel, (same as Gunny used) Seekins lower, Areo precision upper, Spikes Tactical Milspec tube, Geissele braided spring and buffer weight with 2 additional tungsten weights bringing it to H-3 spec, Davidson defense arm guard, Delta team tactical gas block, Magpul CRT stock.

Bushnell red dot and YHM riser should be here tomorrow. All I need now is the bolt, and some form of flash hider or thread protector. Already have Aim Surplus nickle boron carrier and charging handle.

Darn near range time.

You guys are making me want another one......

Gunny i didnt really realize how large that brake was till that last picture. If anything will make a difference on a .458 it would be that thing :D

We did shoot it Thursday at Aklys Defense. Three rounds without the brake and three rounds with. The felt recoil was about the same, but muzzle rise with the break was almost zero.
I took it to work Friday and we shot it in the test fire room. I think two of my coworkers are going to build one. One of them said that shooting a big dire AR in on a whole new level of AR fun.

The lack of felt recoil reduction was my experience as well, but the Radical brake only vents to the side, so didnt provide the reduction in muzzle rise. That in and of itself (and cause it looks awesome) is a good enough reason for that brake.

A little further, YHM riser and Bushnell red dot mounted. All I need is a bolt and something for the barrel tip...

Ordered two different ones from Delta Team, one similar to A-2 but billed as helping with barrel rise, the other appears much more like a brake, but the way its venting is, I dont really see how it would help with barrel rise.

Camera batteries charging, pics shortly...

What is everybody using for magazines or magazine mods for these. 458 rifles?

I have seen a few followers designed to be used in magazines for .458 socom, but I was not sure if it was required for the round or to limit the number of rounds in the magazines.
BTW, how many rounds fit in a 30 round AR mag? (Of .458 SOCOM, of course)

As long as your mag has an anti tilt follower, it should work fine. I use a 20 aluminum GI type mag that I put a Magpul follower in. It only holds 6 rounds and I’m fine with that.
The 458 does not require single stack followers like the 450 Bushmaster.

20s turned into 6 rounders is about perfect for a big bore. No need for big mag dumps when hunting, and six pigs is about all you'd get a chance at shooting them over feeders anyway. Plus a quick mag change is easy with an ar...

I don't hunt. I don't do mag dumps. Just needed to know how many a 30 round held, (because that is what I have), and if special follower required.

I don't have any 20 round on hand, do have a few 10 round I use for bench. Guess I need to hunt up a few 20 round ones.

My 458 socom and 450 BM both run on unmodified Colt 20 round mags.
