Hello Everyone,

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a 8lbs jug of W231 this past weekend when I was on my anniversary hehe.

Anyone have some good range loads they use or have used in the pasts for 230Gr RN Plated (RMR Bullets) with W231?

I looked in my books (lyman and hornady) and one has 5.0 as starting and the other has 5.2 gr starting. Anything you guys have that you found works good and would like to share is greatly appreciated.

I have used 5.4 grains of HP38 with Berry's 230g plated RN. I don't have any chrono data but it shoots and functions well in my 1911's

Dave,

I have used W-231 with Berrys 230 PRN.My charge of 5.3 grains clocks right at 830 FPS. That is pretty close to the standard military ball. This was in a 5 inch M 1911A1. This was a very clean accurate load.:)

I have loaded a "fair" amount of .45acp with Berry's 230g plated. I have had no trouble at all with them in .45 as the fps on a 230g bullet is relatively low. Had LOTS of trouble with them tumbling in 9mm and had to slow them down to keep them stable.

Have not used W231 but have built a number of them with Unique and also with LongShot powders. You should not have any problem with W231 anywhere within the spec'ed load data. BTW I just used the LRN data for both powders.

like a lot of other folks, i use 5.0 gr W231 under my 230 gr plated RN. shoots easy. reasonably accurate. good for plinking, practice drills, etc.

I'm rather new at this, so I work up my loads rather than starting in the middle. I started at 4.5gr of W231 with the 230gr Berrys plated bullets. It cycled the gun fine, but was pretty weak. You may wish to do this as well. I learn a lot by doing it: looking at the brass, recoil, primer and target along the way.

I ended up liking the 5.0gr load in the end and an COAL of 1.265 (from using the barrel plunk test). This made for a reliable, accurate and safe load in my 1911. YMMV.

edit: I used the lead and fmj data from the Hodgdon web site

While YMMV, it shouldn't, because that is a good load. :)

Thanks everyone for the info. I'm going to load some up today and test them out in my 1911.

5.4-5.6 grains of 231 with extreme plated bullets. Right at 800 fps in RIA full size 1911.

Hornady maxes at 5.7, speer manual maxes over 6.0! I wouldn't use these for plinking however.
