45acp and 9mm loads for IDPA

I'm looking for some commercial and or special order loads in .45acp and 9mm that still make the required power factor but just barely.

My guns are the CZ75b in 9mm and a Springfield "loaded" 1911 in .45acp.

I do not as yet reload, and if I do it will only be for the .45 so right now i'd like advice on pre made stuff.

Just FWIW, even at the IDPA Nationals, most seem to use Winchester White box in 9mm....

I just got my first order of competition ammo from Lancer Ammo (www.lancerammo.com). They make competition loads in all calibers. I bought 1000 rounds of the 147-gr 9 mm load which is loaded to make minor power factor. It is a VERY sweet shooting round. Until now, I've been shooting strictly WWB ValuPak -- but not any more! The recoil from the Lancer round is significantly less and I find myself shooting more accurately and recovering faster between shots.

The price is about $4 per box higher than WWB, but worth it in my book. I'll be ordering another 1000 rounds soon. They're running a special through August (it's been extended ..the web site says July) ...1000 round of 9mm is about $7 off -- that pays about half the shipping for me. (Service was quick, too. Ordered it on a Sunday and had it by Wednesday.)

All I can tell you is that I've been very happy with it...and I'll be shooting a lot more of it in the future!

+1 on the recommendation for Lancer ammo.

I use the 147 9mm for IDPA. No problem with steel. Cycles in every gun we have tried it in - including a brand new Glock 17 (the guy's reloads would not cycle the gun). There is a local shooters group and the owner let us try 9mm, 40 S&W and .45 competition ammo. Everybody that shoots IDPA that was at that shoot is using and recommending his ammo!

45 range brass: pick it up=free
45 bullets, 230 rainier 60.00/K = 6cent each
powder, less than 5 grians, 1.2 cents
primer, 15.00/K 1.5 cents each

The 45 loads will help more as factory ammo is way over the 165,000 PF. Factory 9mm is much closer to the 125,000 PF for SSP and ESP. If you’re loading for .45 acp (save $109 per 1000) it won’t take long to recover from the initial investment in equipment. I guess 9mm wouldn’t either at $7 a box; however, I only save $5 per 1000 against wwb $3.98 per 50.

youll need 3.8-4.0 grains CLAYS to make major power factor(165000) maybe not if you shoot a 6 inch longslide though....

Only if you use the Precision bullets in 230grn will 3.6 of Clays make PF. At 1.235 OAL they chronoed at Nationals an average of 748 fps (172 PF) out of a 5" STI, room to spare. They produce higher velocities than the jacketed/plated bullets I have tried and don't smoke like lead. This is the result of a proprietary coating. Price is $52 1000.

Lancer now makes a 124gr 9mm competition round. They gave out samples at the NC State IDPA competition. They have been in my range bag since the match.

I've been very pleased with the 147gr competition ammo but thought I'd give this a try. It's so new that it is not listed on their web site. Thought I'd let others know it exists in case you are interested.

I use the Miwall 125g FMJ reloads for $4.95 a box from outdoormarksman.com.

They have virtually no recoil in my G19, they're accurate, clean, and they're CHEAP!

I can't seem to find the sheet with all my testing, but when I chronographed about 10 commercial 115 grain FMJ 9mm cartridges, all came in just above power factor 125, (1087 fps) just right for IDPA and IPSC minor. Most were 1100-1150 fps.

I live at about 750 feet above sea level, so factor that in, and this was out of a Glock 17. The way IDPA calculates power factor this gives a nice margin of safety, as the actual test is with the longest barrel allowed in the category, which is longer than 17 barrel.

As indicated above, you will get more benefit from concentrating your reloading efforts on .45 ACP, where the factory loads are often at 180 or higher, when only 165 is necessary.

Out of a friend's Beretta 92, with a longer barrel, almost all were 50 fps faster. The Glock 34 is slightly longer still and legal in Production (IPSC) and SSP (IDPA).

WW White box 115gr FMJ was consistantly clocking 1200+ fps out of my hi-power clone... more than hot enough for IDPA, available at Wal-mart for $10/100... almost cheaper than you can reload it.

I reload 147 grain ZERO, JHP's, to run 900 fps for ESP, IDPA, and Production, IPSC.
