45acp with 250gr bullet

Hi all!

For some time now ive been reloading two 45 calibres. 45Colt with a 250gr flatnose lead bullet and 45acp with 230 LRN.

With the ever rising cost of components and the fact that the 230gr LRN are rather hard to come by these days around here it would be great if i could use the same bullet on both calibres.

Both of them are .451 and the 250gr is actually shorter than the 230gr LRN. I reloaded up a bunch of dummys and manually cycled them through my STI lawman. Worked like a charm.

All my manuals lists data up to 230gr and thats it.

Does anyone in the US have a reloading manual that lists data for a 250gr bullet? And heres the problem... With Vihtavuori powders! Preferably N340 or N320..

If you have access to 45 Autorim data, you can use that. I use Accurate Arms data. The max published AA9 load, 12.0, gives me 935fps in a 5" barrel. That's all I need from 45acp.

250 Gr bullets shoot fine in the .45ACP. I have shot a bunch of Ranier 250 Gr bullets intended for the .45 Colt in my 1911's. I shot it with 5.5 Grs. W-231

N320 is a great .45 powder. I would start in the middle of N320 data for 230 Gr bullets and work up. N340 gave me too much recoil for the velocities produced in .45 ACP. N320, AA #5, WSF, & Universal Clays all beat it out in that area.

The last time I shot the Ranier 250 I was trying something new. All loads used WLP primers and were shot from a 4" CDP. O.A.L. was 1.210 to 1.215

4.2 Grs N310
Hi-718 / Lo-690 / Avg-702 / ES-28 / SD-10

5.2 Grs N320
Hi-749 / Lo-709 / Avg-733 / ES-40 / SD-15

5.2 Grs AA #2
Hi-766 / Lo-728 / Avg-743 / ES-38 / SD-12

All Loads were clean although AA #2 left a few 1/2 burned granules, needed a bit more pressure.

All loads were pretty accurate, although not outstanding.

N310 had the lowest velocity and the lightest recoil. N320 & AA #2 had similar velocities with similar recoil, which was more than the N310 load, which was light.

All loads could go up in powder a bit, .1 at a time. I gave the N320 load 2 stars(out of 4, I have no 5 star loads, yet) The N310 load showed real potential, but needed to be worked up SLOWLY. If AA #2 cleaned up completely before it ran into pressure trouble, which it should, it would be a good one as well.

These loads were safe in my gun, use at your own risk.

The Lee manual has loads for 250 grain jacketed and lead bullets for 45 acp. Only with Accurate powders though. #7,#9,#5,#2, and Solo 1000.
