I want to load some 45colt black powder loads with ffgoex and fff pyrodex. Only thing holding up the progress is bullet lube.
I want to try a few before I go full bore into it, so questions are how do I get the smokeless lube out of the bullets I have and how do I get the black powder lube in and will borebutter work as a lube
Thanks

Smokeless type lube will work OK with Pyrodex, but real black powder may need something different. Most cast bullets made to shoot with smokeless powder do not carry enough lube to work well for extended black powder shooting. Bullets designed to be shot using black powder have wide, deep grooves to hold more lube. Unlike Pyrodex's greasy fouling, block powder residue can become hard and caked-on. A soft, greasy lube like SPG or Bore butter will keep the fouling soft so it won't interfere with accuracy, but you need quite a bit of it on each bullet. You might try a lube-impregnated felt wad under the bullet to help with this. .45 Colt pistols usually have less problems with fouling than riles.

If you really want to try to use a different lube boil the bullets and the wax will melt and float to the surface. Let everything cool and remove wax from top of water. Relube by putting bullets in a pan and pouring warmed mixture around bullets up to height wanted. Next after it has cooled take a hollow tube or larger brass casing with primer area drilled out and use this to cut down by and remove bullet from the pan with lube attached. Then size as needed (lee push through sizer is not expensive). There are several other ways but this is a simple way with basic tools. Or you could buy Black Powder designed bullets with proven lube already on them. Some of the vendors will offer sample packs as well. Just sayin.

Go to Cast Boolits web site and there are more answers there.

Frogo, why size again? I'd think if he has already lubed bullets, they were already sized.
A 45-70 case with the head cut off works as a "kake kutter" as Lyman used to call them.
I do like the Lee push through sized. And I have a Star, a 45, and three 450s. Luckily, picked em up cheap. Really saves time and frustration, keep one each set up with .452, .358, .309, .430 and .225. Mount on Lee bench plates, two minute changeover. And no thread stripping.
Anyway, for OP, I have not tried it but have seen beeswax and Vaseline recommended. Might check castboolitsgunloads for recipes as there is a whole section on that forum dedicated to lubes.

Why worry about it? The lube you have is "just good enough". Shoot-up what you have and then worry about specialized lube for new bullets.

Why size again? To get excess lube off the outside of the bullet so it will not gunk up his seating die as soon.;) OP you might try shooting a small sample of them as is or with the already mentioned lubed felt wad and see if the fouling is too poor to shoot them all up or works OK.

Just wipe the outside of your current bullets down with the Bore butter. Bore butter by itself doesn't make a very good bullet lube, but if you mix it 2-1 with beeswax it will suffice until you can get a good blackpowder lube.

the Black Spot gave you good advice on a quick and dirty way to get shooting.

Making BP lube is easy - beeswax, Crisco and olive oil will get you there:
  • 50% Beeswax
  • 40% Crisco Shortening (not liquid)
  • 10% Olive Oil

Cannola oil is better than olive oil because it has a higher boiling point. I like to use an oil soap as it aids in cleaning up.

I don't like the BP subs. The fouling seems harder and the smell isn't right. FFFg will give you a little more velocity than FFg, especially in anything 6" or shorter barrel. Clean with hot water and dish soap.

Enjoy! :)

My load is 30 gr of goex 3f, .5 cc of cream of wheat filler, then a 250 gr wadcutter bullet. It will shoot through 4 milk jugs of water.
The cream of wheat will also keep leading down if you use a real soft bullet. And it smells like fresh baked cookies when you shoot!
