5.56?

Just me personally? I'd buy the Ruger instead if I was in the market for a rifle like that.

I wasn't even interested in another AR style til the Ruger came out. It's a very interesting rifle.

For that price, no. I could build 3 AR's for the same money and I don't see the piston system to be that much more of an improvement over the DGI system. If you have the money and want something that'll draw looks, then go for it. I always like the sleepers, myself.

for me, they aren't worth the money. i will stick with my ar, save my money buy ammo and attend a couple training courses.

If it's not adopted by someone's military, how long will it be available? Right now lots of makers are putting out piston upper guns trying to snag a contract, but there's not much indication the military anywhere is that interested. The economy worldwide isn't promoting the idea of spending money on something that's not considered broken. Politician's have other economic footballs to juggle.

For extensive use, parts will break, and there's only one source. SIG parts wouldn't be cheap.

Some folks spend money to have what can't be had. I'd use the money to build an AR with multiple uppers, buy ammo, train, and shoot. Shooter performance is the final goal.

Just to clarify any misunderstanding, the Sig 556 is not related to the AR15 in any way, and shares no parts commonality at all (other than the stock on some models I guess).

I had high hopes for the 556, and they could potentially still make it into something I would like, but I've bought at least two rifles since the 556 was introduced... I've handled just about every iteration they have released, and yet to feel the need to have one. It may be mostly the furniture and/or finish, but to me they just feel cheesy. That new stock, for instance, is absolutely horrible. It makes a regular CAR stock feel absolutely tight and top quality.

I might get a used one if the price is right... I have seen them locally for $1200-1300 lightly used. I do like the long-stroke piston system... aside from the caliber and the mags, its more like an AK than an AR.

I am not yet convinced that the new short-stroke AR uppers are really any better than the old impingement system. Time will tell.

I'd go for a Robinson arms XCR over the Sig 556, if I were looking to spend that kind of money. But, I already have 3 complete AR-15s and a complete lower earmarked for a 22lr upper eventually.

how are they versatile?

its a lot of d'oh for a weapon that's no better than any quality AR...

it's kind of like the mini14 v AR debate... i sold my mini14 because it was totally useless to me. ARs are about three times as much as minis (the way i build them at least), but they shoot the same cartridge... does the AR shoot the 5.56 cartridge better enough to justify the expense? absolutely... they shoot it better and more reliably.

does the 556 shoot the 5.56 better enough than an AR to justify the money? that's up the guy standing there at the gun counter with his checkbook... but for me, absolutely not. you can't beat a good 5.56 AR for accuracy or durability.

I have a Sig556 SCM (NJ compliant model) that I think is great. I had initial issues with accuracy (which Sig quickly fixed by changing out the barrel) and from that point forward have been really impressed with the accuracy, lack of any recoil, ease of use (little cleaning involved) and dependability - it will eat anything I put thru it - it does favor 62gr and above ammo - it has a 1:7 twist. I can easlie put 5 shots in ~2 inches at 100 yards with 75 grqain ammo.

I paid just south of $1300 for it - and yea I could have purchased 2-3 AR-type rifles, but thats not what I wanted. I bought it cause it's unique, and for Sigs reputation. Prior to the purchase I handled and shot Colt, Stag, and DPMS ARs and while they were good, they didnt do anything for me.

The other posts are right, you can't buy accessories and furniture at the corner store - but you can buy sights, stocks, grips, forehand grips, and anything you can put on a picatinny rail for the gun. Since I bought the Sig, I have had additional opportunities to shoot an AR - and I still stand behind my purchase.

I've been doing a lot of dreaming about which rifle i want to buy when i get the funds and a from my research, the robinson XCR seems to be a great, great rifle. I think an xcr is much better than a sig556. Get one for me.:)

A top quality AR and a Sig 556 are pretty much right on par price-wise. I don't know where you are going to get "2 to 3 ARs" for $1300, but absolutely I agree, I would definitely take a 556 over any AR that costs between $430 and $650.

I can buy AR-15 parts at the corner gas station if I ever need them.

Try that with a SIG!
You wouldn't need to.

"Worth" is in the eye of the beholder.

I own a semi CAR-15 clone and shoot M4A1s and M4LEs daily, so those bases were covered.

To me, it was worth it, but I got a pretty decent deal on a standard SIG 556. The fit and finish was quite a bit better than the standard Colt M4, military or commercial. I've encountered lots (20+) brand new M4s that had gritty triggers and selector switches, right out of the box. The SIG was smooth on both accounts.

Accuracy is similar, with the same ammo.

The SIG feels a bit smoother on recoil.

My biggest peeve with the SIG 556 is the lack of iron sights. The stock emergency sights are barely useable, even for emergency purposes. I used a Samson flip up front sight with a GG&G/Matech rear sight for a while, with good results, but the cheek weld left a bit to be desired. I finally broke down and purchased SIGs diopter rear sight and hooded front. This combination yeilded a sight height that fit the gun and allowed for a proper cheek weld, but it was expensive.

The optics that I've tried on it are the EOTech 552 and 3x magnifier, Acog TA47 (carry handle version) with flattop adapter, and the ELCan Specter DR. The ACOG is the only one that didn't interfere with manipulation of the charging handle. This combination also allowed the unimpeded use of the SIG diopter sights.
