I don't know anything about reloading, so here is my chance to ask a stupid question.

Check out the following auction. This is a guy selling 1 box of SS190 ammo. He wants $750! The price is already up to $350!!

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=70885734

I am amazed, of course.

Isn't one of the purposes of reloading to overcome this issue? So the market will not sell SS190/SS191/SS193 to civilians. It shouldn't be a problem. Load it yourself. Are the bullets unavailable? Make them yourself. Is this illegal? I get the impression that it is not - after all, there is a small (incredibly expensive) market for this ammo right now. If it was illegal for its AP properties, then 5.56 x 45 mm NATO would be illegal. The subsonic rounds wouldn't be illegal under any law I know. It just appears to be "RESTRICTED SALE - AGENCY DROP-SHIP ONLY per FNH-USA company policy". FN's policy is FN's policy, it isn't the law.

Can these ammo variants be reverse engineered by reloading or is the bullet design too exotic? Why isn't a smaller ammo maker attacking this market?

It's not a stupid question at all. In fact, you appear to know most of the answers already. Many people buy guns that use somewhat exotic ammo when they don't reload. handloading this one is an excellent idea. In fact, the powder that FNH uses in the SS190 is available to handloaders. It comes from Belgium also. Ramshot True Blue.;)

Eh, whatever the market will bear. He wouldn't be selling it for that if people weren't willing to pay it.

Actually the federal law is very clear - no steel core bullets in a pistol cartrige. 5.7x28 is a pistol cartrige since FN makes the 5.7 USG and 5.7 IOM. FN agreed to sell the ammo only to LEO PO and Address - BATF agreed.

Steel core bullets are available on ebay for about $40 for quantity 250.

Would not want to be the person who has that ammo for sale.... Too much risk.

Be safe, BSR

Last I looked the fivesevenforums have been closed, they had lots of information for reloading 5.7x28.

Dies are available.

Good luck, BSR

AS SBR wrote, the SS190 is not legal to own for civilians.
I actually have two boxes as a FFL/SOT and I have seen those crasy "collector" prices.
Even if someone would offer me $500 for a box of SS190, I would not risk my license for this.
This is one of the big things about the 5-7: It is useless without the right ammo.
A .357 SIG, .40 or .45 has much better stopping power. Maybe even the 9mm!

We have a few reloaders on our FN site. One guy sells rounds (his name is wildeye111) - But yea - that is ridiculous

Maybe useless is not the right word.
I tested the 5-7 against the .17HMR and .357 SIG and the .357 SIG did better by one phone book and I used the SS190 in the 5-7!
If you use SS195/6 the results will be even less good.
Then the 5-7 is bigger then a USP! So it's not an easy CCW gun.
A Glock 31 or 22 has 15 rounds, a G17 even 17 and with the exstantion it's 19.
I would take a G17 every day over a 5-7!
The 5-7 has only the nose upfront if you have to get through a balistic vest and you can use the SS190.
As a civilian that will never be the case!

I have my doubts that you CAN effectively reload this round, for a couple of reasons. Both the pistol and the PDW work as blowbacks, and require a lube on the case to work properly without getting case separations or jams (the FN factory rounds use a dry wax-like lube, and I've got no idea what a private reloader would use in its place). The shoulder also blows noticeably forward on firing.

Actualy the SS197 performs very well and I would put it up against 357sig antyime. The fivesevenforum and the PS90 forum are awash in pics of what these rounds can do. The SS190 has a limited use, it is designed for one thing. The SS195 and SS197 perform diferrently then the SS190 and are much more affective against soft targets as in Bad Guys

SDC Sorry you are wrong you can re-load the 5.7 It'sjust not as easy as say 45ACP or 40S&W. Myself and another have started a company doing just that.

Again I am sorry but your wrong. the cases are laquer coated. The laquer is very hard to get off. I know My partner even went to the extreme of using sandpaper to scuff it upand then a walnut tumble for 48 hours. It was still intact after this.

You don't mean to say that FN LIED to me when I asked them about this at their demo? ;) Did you try FIRING any of those rounds that had had their exterior lube removed, and, if so, what were the results?

I have read that the cases can be reloaded a couple of times before the laquer comes off enough to where it will not function in the PS90. But, supposedly, U can keep reloading the ammo to work in the handgun afterwards - the coating isn't as important in the handgun.

Ship is correct concerning the coating We are working on this though. May even try spraying +time used brass with auto piant clear laquer to see what happens

Our company came about because folkes just wanted more chioces than what FN offers in projectiles. BIAS well yes you should check out the pics what the SS197 did to a log on PS90forum.com

It would seal the bullet and primer also. Would by easier to handle then empty brass also
interresting
