i know that there used to be better 5.7x28mm ammo out there but they stopped making it for press reasons. i want to know what made it better and if i could reload it as the good stuff. any ideas? :)

They stopped making it because they relied on factory ammo as their source of brass. They pulled down the ammo and reloaded it.

Handloading can improve performance, you have to be very carefull as it is very easily overloaded.

i want to know what made it better
It was 'better' because it was designed to penetrate military body armor.

And that made it a 'cop killer' bullet under federal law.

So what they are allowed to sell you under federal law is what you can get.

The fact is, for civilian use, the plastic tip Sporting round made by federal is a better SD round then the AP round would be.

It had nothing at all to do with who had cases, as FNH always had cases to load all types of ammo for it.

As for reloading it?

It would be about the last caliber in the world a new reloader should start learning to reload with.

Case stretch is extreme due to the blow-back action and high pressure.
Not to mention the proprietary case coating they use to aid extraction on the factory loaded ammo.

SS190 (the alleged 'super' round that was in fact just the original duty round) was not and has never been legally "armor piercing" and therefore subject to federal laws regulating its sale or manufacture.

Its aluminum core made the bullet light, so it went super fast, and the combination of light, fast, and small bullet means it will shear through armor (or anything) efficiently. It's a bullet that pierces armor, but is not armor piercing (there is a legal difference)

FNH decided to stop selling LEO ammo to civilians of their own accord, because the Brady Campaign wouldn't stop generating publicity about cop killer rounds. SS190 was no more armor piercing than Black Talon was an explosive bullet, but both were pulled for the same reason.

Companies now load ammo that duplicates or exceeds the SS190's performance (it was loaded slightly hotter than now standard SS196) without the need for a fancy bullet. If they've stopped production, it's because of massive disruption the 5.7 supply chain last year stemming from a labor strike, as well as the later panic.

That is the ONLY round I own that I will never reload. Too dangerous from my readings on the subject.

I'm inclined to agree. 90% of the problem is the blowback action; all the difficulties of reloading the 5.7 stem from the blowback operation (coated cases, crimped primer, huge shoulder setback). If a true recoil or gas operated locked-breech configuration could be devised, I think 5.7 would be no worse to reload than 223 (I doubt I'd want to reload for a blowback 223 like the FAMAS, either ;) )

The other 10% is still that errors are magnified by the small size, as well as the few options in bullet and powder :D
