Carrying ammo would get pretty heavy. But if you want to send whoever you're aiming at a message.....

Unless you're defending against marauding Moose or Elk, or need to seriously attempt to disable a vehicle - no. In fact, home/small area perimiter defense is one of the few roles I actually like a pistol caliber carbine for. The greatest advantage of the 6.5/6.8/.450/.458/.50B calibers is their ability to deliver a real punch at extended range where the 5.56 doesn't.

I don't know, for me I would want a rifle chambered in a caliber that is readily available. Ergo .223, .308, 7.62x39. You might have a hard time scrounging for some of the more exotic calibers....

Exactly, replenishing your ammo supply could become a major problem.I would stick to the most popular military type rounds as it will be the most available to barter for.Chances are you won't be able to buy any as the first thing the Gov will do is ban the sale of all guns and ammo.
