50 Beowulf vs 458 socom vs 450 bushmaster from 12" barrel

Got my upper from tromix. They were very quick and easy to deal with. Most importantly it works great!

My favorite part is I can just swap my upper in place of my 556 and have a big bore rifle without having to buy another rifle or tote one. Same feel and controls on the gun etc. I have an extra heavy buffer and spring to play with, but have not been able to do it yet.

Will try to get a deer with it this year. I expect performance to be in 4570 territory, or better, so it should hammer them.

Accuracy is great. I have a 4x acog on it and with the hornady 325s I am very consistently under 1.5 inches at 100 yards. Minimal load work, so I am sure there is more left on the table. Have not gotten to work up anything with the barnes bullet yet, but soon hopefully.

For deer take a look at the 300grn ballistic tip, the muzzle loader one, not the one for .45-70.Nosler has Data available for it on their site. Im running the RL-7, trajectory is pretty decent considering, (I actually use a muzzle loader scope on my gun now), and the velocity is right in the range the bullets designed to operate at.

I have a solid buffer and heavy spring that I use for both my Grendel and my .458, since i dont have adjustable gas blocks they do help keeping the gun from slinging brass into next week. Recoil isnt a huge issue its a nice firm shove.
With the Tromix built upper Id try one part at a time, you may find that it is less over gassed then some of the others.

Ya know, Ive been running my gun sans muzzle break and honestly it looks a little wierd, but other than that, and the blast not being as bad I cant really tell much of a difference.
With these low pressure rounds I dont think the breaks really do alot of good. When i build another .458 (which i probably will, as my buddy keeps pestering me for the one i have), ill probably go with a 18" barrel sans muzzle device.
You MAY want to consider getting a non SBR length barrel and omitting the muzzle device. You'll likely only end up with a gun thats about 2" longer than you would with a 12" and a break. that is if you arnt bothered by the way it looks, cause they DO look funny without something on the end.

I have a .450 Bushmaster with a 20" barrel but am going to have it cut down to something in the 12" range and will have the muzzle threaded 5/8-24 for a suppressor (Ti-RANT 45 or Hybrid subsonic only?). Running numbers for the 300gr XTP MAG in QuickLOAD indicates that there's about a 180 fps loss going from 20" (1,975 fps) to 12" (1,795 fps). I'll be shooting the 260gr bonded AccuTip BT from Remington and with a 12" barrel should be up around 2,100 fps. Adding a suppressor typically increases velocity so I might get up to 2,200 fps ... we'll see. I'd like to work up a subsonic load for it too at some point using the 300gr XTP MAG or similar. Basically this will be a bear protection gun for me while hiking. I removed the 1.5-5X scope that I had on the rifle and now only have a set of Troy BUIS. I bought a set of replacement front posts with narrower profiles to help with aiming, but overall the rifle is surprisingly accurate and has proven to be rock solid reliable without a single issue in 200 or so rounds.

Is the TiRant approved for the .450 at subsonic levels?

AAC states not to use +P .45 ACP ammunition... that's all the info I can find. Pressure at the muzzle is the key and QuickLOAD is helpful there. A typical 230gr .45 ACP shot from a 5" barrel has around 2,500 psi at the muzzle.... not sure about a 3" or 4" barrel but they're going to be higher.

I don't have any idea about AAC's can but my 458 socom suppressor had a 4140 blast baffle and 6061 K baffles and it has held up to everything I have thrown at it. It does have a quite large initial chamber though.

What about the .450?

Running the numbers in QuickLOAD, the pressure at the muzzle of a 12" barrel shooting 300gr Hornady XTP bullets at 1,050 fps is 1,708 psi which is very low. With a 16" barrel the pressure drops to 1,185 psi and the velocity bumps up a bit to 1,105 fps. The bottom line is that there's no question that the Ti-Rant 45 is safe with .450 Bushmaster subsonic loads since the pressure at the muzzle is less than a 230gr .45 ACP from a 5" barrel. The big question for me is whether a 260gr load going 1,850 fps from a 12" barrel and producing 5,500 psi at the muzzle is a problem for the Ti-Rant 45.

I'm sending my .450 BM barrel out today to be cut down from 20" to 12" and having the muzzle threaded 5/8"-24 for the AAC fixed barrel adapter... whoohoo! :D

It was 6-7months before the rule change last July. A LOT of folks got theirs in right before the change went into effect and that has really extended wait times. I'm waiting for two myself that should be in soon, a TiRant .45 and a TacSol Axiom but haven't even submitted paperwork for my Hybrid yet. We have a family NFA trust and me and the old man are trying to do several at one time to simplify things.
