So I finally got around to firing my .50 beowulf, after taking forever to put it together, and then letting it sit in my safe for a very long time, and it doesnt work! After the first two shots it was not feeding, the bolt fully cycled, and cleared the old shell casing, but did not pick up a new round! I am stumped, becouse the bolt is fine, the gun is clean, and I never heard of a rifle doing this before. I think it is the magazine, has anyone encountered a similar issue with AR rifles?

I dont have another mag, I neeg to get one. I think that may be the problem. When I cycle the bolt manually there is no issue.

I bet it's the mag. If you don't get many replies here you might try asking at beyond556.com, there may be an easy fix for the mag like lubing the spring a little, bending the feed lips a tad, etc. I have a beowulf upper on order from AA, allegedly I'll see it soon. I can't wait to try it out!

From the Alexander Arms FAQ:

Will the Beowulf® magazine feed .223 shells?
No, it will not.

Can any .223 magazine be used in the .50 Beowulf®?
Yes, but the feed lips must be modified.
The feed lips need to be opened up to allow for the much larger cartridge.
In addition, a new follower needs to be installed to allow for the single stack configuration of the Beowulf® cartridge.

Could be a gas issue as well, maybe not enough gas going coming back through to give the bolt a FULL cycle. it may go back enough to clear and eject but not pick up the new round. had this very same issue on a .300 blackout and inevitibley it was the gas system

If the mag switch/fix doesnt work. take your gas block off and see where the "round burn" mark is on your barrel it should be centered over your gas port (or as centered as possible)

if its ont he edge one way or the other it may not be getting enough gas

I also have and upper on order since FEB from AA and ammo on order. who knows if and when ill ever get it.

good luck to you

My beo runs like a top but had its teething problems, mostly due to converted magazines. The feed lips are real critical. Good news is once you get them tweeked they work great. Its hard to decribe what you have to do. Mostly its just bending the lip until the round is at the right angle. I was lucky and had a AA clip that came with mine that ran well. I just more or less copied what they did. Some ar mags will work fine. I cant figure out why but if i take say 10 mags 2 will work without and fooling around at all.

IF it literally failed to "pick up" a new round, then either the cartridge didn't rise up in the magazine (tilted follower, Cartridge Case OAL too long) or it "short stroked".

Look at the magazine first, if you don't find a problem there...we can address "short stroking" (several causes).
