Hi guys I'm new here and have a question.

I live in the US and am looking to pick up a .50 bmg rifle.

Can I bring this rifle into Canada to go hunting or target shooting with.

If not I am considering picking up a .408 chetac or .338 lapua.

Thanks

I'd contact these people to be sure:

Bringing a Firearm into Canada

You may bring a hunting rifle or shotgun and up to 200 rounds of ammunition into Ontario as a visitor, but you must be 18 years of age or older to do so and the firearms must be for hunting or competitions use.

* You must be at least 18 years of age to bring firearms into Canada.

* You must either have a Canadian Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) or you have to register your firearms at the Canadian border. You are able to obtain and complete a Non-Resident Firearms Declaration form before you cross the border which will make it easier and less time consuming. The permit fee is $25.00 (CDN) per person for a temporary registration permit and the permit is valid for 60 days. Call toll-free 1-800-731-4000 to get a Firearms Declaration Form.

* Easiest way to obtain a Canadian PAL (possession and Acquisition License) prior to importing guns into Canada. If you have a PAL, you do not have to fill out registration forms and there is only a one time fee.

* You cannot import prohibited firearms. Fully automatic weapons, all hand guns and guns of less than 66 cm (26 inches) in length are prohibited by law.

* Restricted firearms such as pistols or revolvers may be temporarily imported if you have an Authorization to Transport (ATT) in advance from a Canadian Chief Firearms Officer.

* Seasonal residents may import restricted firearms, but must have a Possession and Acquisition License or a valid Firearms Acquisition Certificate in addition to an ATT.

I think the .50 BMG is legal in Canada but I would check with the above to make sure.
Just Curious. What are you hunting with a .50 BMG?

Well, they sell them here and you can purchase them without a restriced licence so I'd say there legal. What province are you going to? Because there isnt anything here I can think of that wouldnt be completely distroyed with that round. Either hunting for trophy or for meat I dont think there would be much of either left.

In some regards, firearms that would qualify as large bore destructive devices in the US are actually easier to obtain in Canada, since they are treated like normal rifles instead of DD's.

I must agree that it is a little big, but on the other hand have you ever seen our deer. and what's wrong with wanting to shoot, clean and cook all in one shot? :D

It actually depends on the SPECIFIC .50 you're thinking of; a number of them were prohibited outright by the LIEberals, and that prohibition extends to "variants", so things like the Barret M82, Iver Johnson, and some of the MacMillan 50s are prohibited, but since those were the main ones available at the time, the prohibition doesn't extend to newer designs, or to the new ones being made in Canada.
