I was wondering if anyone had ever created something like the .300 whisper on a bigger scale. It would be something like a .50 caliber bullet in a .300 win mag case that had been necked up. I'm not sure of what kind of performance would be expected but I think it could probably work.

The 300 mag case body isn`t large enough to take a 50 cal bullet if I`m not mistaken. You would have to open the mouth ID of the brass wider then the rest of the cases OD.

The largest caliber I can find on a H&H belted magnum case is .475.
If you want a .50, you will need to go up to .460 Weatherby or some such.
There IS a .510 Whisper if you don't mind paying SSK prices.

The 510 whisper is based on the non-belted 338 lapua case cut down to 1.885" The 500 whisper is based on the cut down 460 weatherby belted case. I have never seen an example of the 500 whisper, but I shoot the 510 whisper in an Encore and have seen posts of numerous others using Sako and Remington actions.

The lapua case has a shoulder cut into the brass when the neck is turned down. I think the 500 whisper is not turned at all and depends on the belt for head spacing.

Using H110 powder for subsonic loads with bullets up to 950 grains uses only 30 grains of powder, so this case is a bit over bored for subsonic. Most people use surplus ball, AP, API and tracer bullets. They only cost about 35 to 50 cents each so are a much better bargain than the $3 each amax bullets. I also use 885 and 950 grain cast bullet from wheel weights, even cheaper, but not as accurate as the 2 moa surplus bullets.

With my homemade silencer, the gun sounds like a car door slamming and is safe to shoot without hearing protection. Brass is $4 each, but lasts a long time. I was able to get a few hundred pieces made by a guy who had access to a CNC machine. My attempts at making my own resulted in a 50% loss due to tolerances on my hobby lathe.

It is a hoot to shoot. I had Premier Reticles make a Leupold VX3 scope with 22 mil-dots on the vertical axis to aid in holdover past the 200 yard zero. The subsonic bullet is losing less than 200 fps when at 600 yards, but has a rainbow trajectory.

Ranb would love to see pictures of the gun and bullets.

I saw a 50 calliber wildcat on the 460 weatherby case in a handgun using the military bullet of 750 grs. Nasty firearm. Used the Weatherby action. 16" bbl. The guy also had a bullpup 50 BMG in a factory rifle, this was before the great muzzle breaks they have now. Recoil is something else without the brake. This is back when military surplus ammo was only $1 a round.
