Does anyone have any load data for the 500 grain Hornady FP/XTP bullets, preferably using Lil Gun or H110?

On a side note, when trying to find data for a bullet does it really make much difference what style the bullet is as long as you have the correct weight? Is a 500 grain bullet a 500 grain bullet?

500 grain FP XTP

I would like to try shooting the 500 S&W one day!!

This by far my favorite bullet for my 8 3/8" 500 S&W. While I haven't gotten a chance to chrony any of these loads yet, I am still very pleased with their accuracy and performance. I use Starline brass and Winchester large rifle mag primers for the below.

For a light plinking load, :D, I use 31gn of H110 seated to 2.065 with a very heavy crimp.

For my hunting loads I use 33gn of H110 seated to the same length with a very heavy crimp.

As for your question about bullet types and load data, yes it does matter. The most important aspect of this is bullet length. If one 500gn bullet is longer than a different style of 500gn bullet, this will change your usable case capacity, which can greatly change pressures.

Lyman lists 31 grains of H110 as the max. I haven't loaded 500 grain bullets, but I will say that Lyman is on the weak side with their load data. I've loaded more powder than that behind a 600 grain bullet.

On your side note, I would say it usually doesn't matter as long as the weight is the same. Of course this is a bad idea if you are comparing solid copper bullets to lead bullets.

herk30,

different bullets can make a big difference. for handguns, and especially the hornady xtp, differences in bullet construction (as stated by 56hawk), bearing surface, seating depth and bullet diameter can have a huge affect on the pressure generated by a handload.

if you are going to load a lot of hornady xtp pistol bullets (my favorite jacketed pistol bullet), i strongly suggest you get a new hornady manual.

btw, the max load for h110 and the 500 grain xtp (from the hornady manual) is 32.5 grains.

enjoy your hand-cannon.

Thanks guys, I should have added that I do have Hornady's 8th edition manual on order but it doesn't look like it will be here for the weekend.

I haven't loaded any 500gr bullets but got 1254fps out of the factory Hornady 500gr XTP loads.

My velocities for .500 have been remarkably low. I started a thread about it somewhere.
