I have an opportunity to buy a BFR in 500S&W for a little over $500. Is this one of those can't miss out on opportunities or should I spend the money on a M1 Garand? :D
 
Buy a Garand.
500S&W is one of the stupidest ideas ever to be implemented by a major gun manufactrer. The gun is barely shootable (esp the 4" version), the ammo is very expensive, and unless you spend allot of time hiking in African savana infested with rabid elephants, this gun has no purpouse. I love my S&W 29s and older 629s (no keyhole), I also love my FA 454 Casul. 500S&W is just too much. Now, it would make a nice carbine round, being shorter then 45/70 based cartridges (more fits in the tubular magazine), but this is propostorous to have in a handgun, unless you suffer form well known Freudian complex :)
 
Buy it.

Shoot it and if you don't like or want it, Sell it and make some money. I like hand cannons, but some people don't. There is someone out there that would love to have it for more money than that.
 
Buy the 500
Unlike the Above poster i find the 4 inch easy to shoot recoils less than my SRH 454 casull It is expensive to shoot factorys loads though and that is why my Dies and bullets etc turned up today

I shoot the 454 and 500 side by sid for 20 rounds and the Casull was worse for recoil and everyone who shot them said same thing
 
I don't see ho Casulls are worse in recoil. I use factory loads only, since I hate to reload and don't have time for it anyway. My time is significantly more expensive then the difference between factory loads and reloads. Corbon Csulls are much more confortable to shoot then 500Smith.
500 Smish is a solution for nonexistant problem.
 
What does Freud say about your 454 Casull?

I think that the 4" S&W 500 is a really dumb gun; a solution in search of a problem that doesn't exist.

I also bought one last weekend and paid a heck of a lot more than $500 for it. If you can get one for $500, and don't want it, PM me because I'd like a chance at it.
 
I want the 3" .500 - loaded with 440-500gr lead or jacketed SP @ 750-800 fps... my 696 needs a big brother. I had a .454 SRH for years... those Hornady 240gr XTP .454 zingers will get folks attention - but they take their toll on your wrist. My .500 idea, only possible with my reloads, should be much milder... once I get past the main hurdle... the $860-$900+ folks want for the S&W .500 Magnum. Then, the dies... lead... cases... another powder...

I think I'll rejoin reality - and go reload some more .44 Russian wimpy-loads... 3.5gr Titegroup pushes a 240gr LSWC/LRNFP over 690fps from my 3" 696... makes 'major' power factor... is mild... my wrist likes them... Ah, the 3" .500 pipe dream!

Whatever happened to John Ross who claimed to be pushing a 625 gr round at 1000 fps out of a .500? I'll bet that thing went kaboom!

Fun thread-if an anti gunner came in here and said "you don't NEED a 500", the first words out of somebody's mouth would be "get a rope".
It's never about "need" - its all about fun and buying what you wish.
 
I wanted to dump a 629, and the only

trade that seemed ok was to move up to a 500, 8 3/8 barell.
I fired it, and it was love! I'll never part with it, as it is a hoot to shoot.
(The other three 629's aint goin nowheres neither :) )
 
Before I bought a .500 BFR I`d wanna shoot it. I have no problem at all with long or short barreled S&W .500s. They never fail to bring a big smile to my face. However the single action frame just doesn`t get along with my hands. My custom Super Blackhawk 5 1/2" .44 Mag. used to beat the snot out of me and leave my hands stinging even with factory 240gr. loads. Much *less* recoil than a S&W.500 but much *more* discomfort. I don`t even wanna try a .500 with the same grip frame. Personally I`m planning on getting a S&W .460 XVR. Marcus
 
I have the SRH .454. I have shot the 500 and have found the Casull to have more bite, but not as much push. My problem with either the BFR or the S&W 500 is the sheer size of the gun. It's just too big to be packable. But this is just my opinion.
 
I have the .454 and the .500. Reload for them both...max 240 grain hornady's for the .454 and 335 grain loaded less then max for the .500. IMHO the .500 has an order of magnitude more recoil then the .454. Both put a big grin on my face and anyone else who wants to shoot them when I happen to bring 'em to the range :)
 
There are 3 reason to own a 500:

1. You need it to shoot bears
2. You're a masochist
3. You're into novelty guns and have money to burn

$500 is a great deal. I'd buy it. :D
 
I just bought one, used, from Correia. He hooked me up on a killer deal. I'm just waiting for the right time to go and shoot it. I brought the round into work along with a .357 Mag and every ones jaw just drops. I also have the round sitting next to a 12gauge shotgun shell and it's just awe-inspiring.

Having shot both side by side, I've found the .500 to be a pussycat compared to the .454. Other then rifle calibered Thompsons Contenders I can't think of a single handgun that was more brutal to shoot then the .454.

At any rate, the .500mag is not a practical gun. Of course thats not the point is it? :p
 
Fun gun to shoot but a bit expensive for the ammo.

$500 --- very good buy and I can't see where you would ever loose money on that deal. Buy it , shoot it , sell it if you don't fall in love.
