1. Ruger 10-22 (scope)
2. Decent 270 Win (scope)
3. M1A Squad Scout (scope) (since I'm still in CA, several 10 rnd mags)
4. M92 9mm
5. Rem 870 12 gauge (20 if I had to)
I'd get all of them used.
As much ammo as I could after that.
(Man, there HAS to be a lever in there! 44 mag? 30-30? 45-70? maybe I'd just make that my 22lr)
(Wait! What about the revolver!) Dang, this is harder than I thought!

If your focus is on quantity rather than quality perhaps. Personally, I'd rather have a small collection of quality items than a large collection of crap!! But that's just me. I would hardly consider a Dakota Arms rifle with a Swarovski scope as "not much".
Amen! Actually, you can make mine a Dakota Model 10 with upgraded wood, color case hardened receiver and scope mounts with a Leupold VX3 1.5-5x and I'll be happy. :)

My point, was that I can buy guns under a $1000 fairly often. Often enough to replenish my collection of rifles in just a few years. However, it's not every day I have $5000 to spend on guns. Point being, since I love custom guns, prefer quality over quantity and will eventually have said $5000 rifle anyway, I would rather spend the money on one really nice rifle and buy a bunch of less expensive ones over time. That sir, is NOT pissing money away. Buying something that is not exactly what you want is pissing away money.

If you think buying quality is pissing money away and spending more than $500 on a rifle makes one a snob, I'd seriously suggest you take a long, hard look at yourself. Because something ain't just right.

If I had to replace my hunting rifles and shotguns, I'd hit the hockshops pretty darned hard. .22 plinking rifles, as well. Cash talks, BS walks.

Starting from scratch, I'd not worry about any high-value collectibles.

Handguns? I'd look for the junkiest 1911 I could find, and do my own rebuild. Then I'd look for one or two others in good-used condition; .22 semi-auto and some sort of decent snubby revolver.

I get a built up savage 10 in .308
A ria 9mm 1911
a nice ruger revolver
probably an anschutz 22lr
good peeps for the anni, very good glass for the savage

I would buy a couple guns that I'm not normally able to afford such as a SCAR and a higher end AR probably a Noveske and a couple of new SIGs

About 20 Hi Point Carbines!

Seriously, though. I've been sort of rebuilding since I haven't had many firearms for a while now. I lost a collection years ago and never replaced it.

So, here are my actual goals, given a somewhat limited budget:

CCW: M&P Shield 9mm. Small and flat enough to carry anytime, regardless of what I'm wearing. Ammo is cheap enough for a decent amount of range time. Gun cost, $385 plus tax. Accessories: Sticky Holster and need a good OWB holster, maybe Bladetech. Sticky working out great for now. Sights suck, so will be looking to get XS sights, $90 for the sights, $75 for my local smith to install. (Cheaper than buying the stuff to do it myself. I also lack space for a proper work bench.) If the trigger doesn't shape up after a few hundred more rounds, I'll have the smith put in the Apex carry kit. That'd run about $150 for parts and his time. Total cost: $645 - 795, plus tax and/or shipping. ETA: Hogue Handall Jr, about $8.

.22 LR Iron Sights Plinker: CZ-452 Special Military Trainer. Cost: $330. (Would probably be more to replace, but that's what I paid locally.) Accessories: Sling. $10. Total cost: $340 + tax.

.22 LR Semi Auto w/Glass (b/c my eyes are aging): Ruger 10/22 with decent scope. Get barrel threaded and add drop in parts as needed. Already have the gun, but let's say starting with a 10/22 Target model for about $350ish? Nikon Prostaff Rimfire about $170, Sling about $15. So, initially about $535 + tax.

.22 LR Pistol w/Threaded Barrel: Either a Buckmark or Ruger 22/45, say about $400 give or take, Suppressor around another $400, tax stamp $200. Total: $1,000.

9mm Carbine, threaded barrel, SBR, Suppressed: Say about $700 for the carbine, either AR flavor or CX-4, about $750 for the suppressor, about $150-ish for the gunsmithing (wild guesstimate), and $400 for the stamps. Total: $2,000.

So, that's $4520. Leaves enough to add an Eotech to the carbine.

I think people are missing that this is in the rifle section and that the OP stated rifles only.
