Hello,
Looking for a mild load using a 400 Grain FP lead bullet and Green Dot powder. I would like something around 800-1000 fps. I will be using a Handi Rifle chambered in 500mag. I know there are better powder to chose however I was given 8# for free. Any recommendations would be great. Thank you.

Can’t help with your specific powder but Trailboss works great in my handi as well as x frame. Have any 45LC brass to use?

Dang, I just realized/remembered that we were talking about 500 mag. I have both a 460 mag and 500 mag and sometimes confuse them. Have you tried looking for 500 Special load data?

That's a tough one. There's nothing out there I've seen in published data. Using Green Dot (pending anyone posting that has used it) would require some methodical extrapolation, approached with great caution due to combining a relatively fast burning powder in a large volume case. I would make sure I was using a chronograph in conjunction with testing to validate the target velocity range.

GD is a little faster than Unique. https://imrpowder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/2020-burn-rate-chart.pdf There are a number of posts on the web discussing Unique in the .500, but nothing I've seen using GD.

LaneP,
I have used TiteGroup with good results. Maybe I will just use powder with published data. I don't want to blowup my rifle. Thank you for the voice of reason.

So I worked up a load using GreenDot. I used 10.5g using a 400g flat point lead bullet from Missouri Bullet and a standard LR primer. I chronographed a group of 5 rounds with an average of 809fps. No signs of over pressure or any leading in the barrel. I also shot a group of 5 rounds using 12g of GreenDot using a 400g flat point lead bullet from Missouri Bullet and a standard LR primer. The results were an average of 838fps also no signs of over pressure or leading. Just for the hell of it I sent 2 rounds of 43g H110 using a 350 HP with a LRMP. 2014 and 2013fps. These both kicked like a mule and were not fun to shoot at all. The milder loads above were a pleasure to shoot.
