I bought this L frame yesterday and it is a bit of a mystery to me.

586_7PC_9656.jpg

It has the features of the dash 4 GIGN guns, but without the crest. SCSW puts it's BCH 00xx serial number as shipped in '88 or early '89. The book mentions another 250 units sold in the U.S. through Camfour, but does not mention that those were a specific dash. I would presume they were also dash 4's like the French market guns (?). This being a dash 7, whadupwhidat?

Any input is appreciated.

Thank-You,
Mike

This is a late model gun, just before they went to the internal lock.

That is one of the overuns from a revolver made for France's G.I.G.N

The G.I.G.N is a French SWAT type unit that does much hostage rescue and anti terrorism work. They still prefer revolvers for the precision shots they must take. They were going to purchase these 4" 6-shot 586-7's but the deal fell through leaving 75 of these floating around in the states. Mostly in Florida too......don't know why.

Anyway, it is a very scarce and VERY nice revolver. Sort of the descendant of my PC pre lock 586-5 L-comp. Hope this helps! TJ

Thad/918,

Many Thanks for your input.
Thaddeus, as I read the blurb in the SCSW, I figured those overruns were dash 4's like the French-export pieces. However, as i've learned through collecting Smiths (and Colts) not every variation is, er... precisely documented!

Kim Ahrends wrote me today, saying the moradillo retro-combats destined for this example are 5 weeks out. I think they will dress-up this gun nicely. I 'll post a pic with her "new shoes" after their arrival.

Regards,
Mike

Bill,

I usually go for a more polished finish and abhor rubber grips, but I made an offer on this and an "honest wear" 39-2 w/ 3 mags and the seller "bit", so I reeled 'em in!
From the feed back here and at S&W forum, I guess I did "OK".

Thank-You,
Mike

$500 in that 586-7!!! Did you have a mask on? ;)

The only one I have seen - two years ago, about 90% with holster wear, went for $1100 without box or docs - before I could draw my wallet!

Congrats! Thats a keeper! :) TJ

Shienhausser,

SCSW describes it as a "flat black finish", it's about like the finish on the slide of my Glock 29.
