So I walked into a gun store one day, and ended up walking out much lighter. I think I overpaid, but I paid it, so obviously it was worth it to me- but that is beside the point. I take it shooting the next day, and the first time cycling the shells through, it fails to eject the last round. I figure I didn't cycle the action hard enough or something, and keep going. I only fired about 10-15 rounds that day, but it kept having trouble. I've unloaded all the shells several times to find the spring and follower about 2 inches down into the magazine tube, not up where it should be.
I took the magazine tube off, and the spring looked like a cork screw. It is very thin wire, and it is a decently smaller diameter than that of the tube, so it is very easy for it to get bent inside the tube. I ordered two more springs, but the first time I installed a new spring, I only loaded it up with 2 less shells than the capacity. I immediately took it back apart and saw that the brand new spring was already bent about 15 degrees off axis. I can understand how it is hard to combat this when you use up 98% of the space with shells, but this gun is advertised to have a 9 shot capacity. Our military uses it in combat. I think it is reasonable to expect 100% reliability from it.
Maybe I should have taken the advice I was given and gotten an 870. Does anyone have any ideas what to do? I can't find an upgraded spring...

I hate to say it, but I have looked at the schematic for an 870 and the magazine tube definitely seems to be designed better. I wonder how mossberg could have dropped the ball so bad on this one? The Remington follower has a rod that extends out of the back to keep it perpendicular to the spring axis- the mossberg doesn't even have that. The spring on the mossberg is about half the thickness of the remingtons, and I think the rem fills up the tube with the spring- the way it should be.

That rod you see on the 870 is the "plug"...its only in there to limit the capacity to 3 (waterfowl regulations)...the 870's run fine without the plug, and will hold 5 shells. My only experience is with the hunting versions of the 870's...the Tacticool ones probably hold more ammo.

In case you didn't look...from Wolff
Extra power magazine springs are available to replace weak or broken springs. No fitting is required

For use in:
Mossberg 590, 12 ga - 9 Shot (8+1)
Mossberg 500, 12 ga Extended Tube 8 shot (7+1)
Stock No.17905 - each............$ 8.99 ea Buy
Stock No.17906 - Pak of 3 .....$ 22.99 ea Buy

I paid $7.41 per from Brownells. Definitely worth the upgrade. Sorry I even bothered with the factory springs.

You could have done a lot worse than a 590- don't worry about it.

I'll be surprised if you aren't happier with the Wolff springs. The 3-pack should have you set for life. 8^)

Be sure there isn't any problem with either the follower or the magazine tube that caused the bind-up, when you take the magazine down to install the Wolff spring. Field strip the gun and shine a light through the mag tube from both ends, look for dents or debris. Examine the follower for rough spots, scratches etc. Drop the follower down the mag tube from the muzzle end with the muzzle of the gun straight up, and make sure it slides freely all the way down under its own weight. Push it up a little with your finger several times before you put the new spring in, and feel for any resistance, with the muzzle up the follower should drop right back down into place.

Hope it works out OK,

The Wolff springs are excellent for all shotguns. They come 40" long. For the 590 cut it to 29" and shape the ends with needle nose pliers. The spring will end up being 28" long. Just right to give extra power and still get 8+1 capacity with standard 2 3/4" shells.

I cut them the same length for 18.5" barrel shotguns with full length tube extensions.

I'll keep that in mind, but on wolff's website they said the 590 spring didn't need fitting... I will check it out when they come in. Thanks!

Just curious, your 590 was brand new? I have had mine for almost ten years now and have never had a hick up. And never a failure to feed like that. I am interested in how those wolff springs work out for you in your 590. Keep us posted.

An no the 590 IS better than the 870 ;)

I highly doubt it is the 18.5 inch spring, because it is longer than the magazine tube by about 6 inches. the gun was brand new... It really threw me, because my 20 ga mossberg has worked flawlessly, and I have horribly abused it.

If you want to get 8+1 cap you will need to trim it to the length I posted.

Some Mossberg factory 590 springs give problems. They bind in the mag tube.

So I got my wolff springs int he mail today, and it looks like they are going to get the ticket. I am disappointed that they are still tapered on the ends, but I loaded it up to full capacity, which horribly yielded the stock spring, and it looked good as new. I may have to try and swap an 870 spring in there and see how it looks, just for my info.

Sorry... but these are shaped and cut to length. Just like it says on their website. The 40" raw spring may be an option, but mine came ready to slap in.

I have the same problem you are having. Is your 590 by chance a Marinecote version? I have a much older 590 in blue that has never even burped. I bought a new one a month ago in Marinecote, and it is giving me a fit. I'm going to try a new spring also. Thanks for posting this thread.

It shouldn't matter the coating I don't think... although it very well may be a year thing. I have heard that an 870 spring will fit, but I don't know how the capacity difference between the rem and the mossberg will effect things.

I just wondered if the less-slick finish maybe made it easier for the spring to bind against the mag tube walls. Guess I'll try a new spring or at least contact Mossberg about it.
