"CBS) Fifteen years ago, Osama bin Laden sent one of his operatives to the United States to buy and bring back two-dozen .50-caliber rifles, a gun that can kill someone from over a mile away and even bring down an airplane.

In spite of all the recent efforts to curb terrorism, bin Laden could do the same thing today, because buying and shipping the world’s most powerful sniper rifle is not as difficult as you might think.

Last winter, Correspondent Ed Bradley reported on just how powerful the gun is. New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly had a sharpshooter fire the department’s own .30-caliber sniper rifle and the bullets bounced off a half-inch-thick plate of steel. Then, the marksman fired the .50-caliber sniper rifle, and the bullets blew right through the steel plate.

Now, you’ll hear from a gunrunner who, just a few years ago, was able to outfit a guerrilla army in Kosovo with those powerful weapons. He was willing to talk to 60 Minutes, because now he thinks what he did was much too easy.

The gunrunner's name is Florin Krasniqi, and he is seen providing a new shipment of weapons to Albanian rebels, who are about to smuggle them over the mountains into Kosovo. After a few days' journey on horseback, the guns will end up in the hands of a guerrilla force known as the Kosovo Liberation Army, which has been fighting for independence from Serbia for nearly a decade ...."

----

My BS detector rang loud when Krasniqi spoke up. For one thing, if he actually did the things he claimed (including VERY illegal arms exports and lying on FFL forms) he would be looking at hard federal time. But I suspect the reason he's free is because he's full of so much hot air. Vis:

"What gun became the weapon of choice for Krasniqi? "By far, the weapon of choice was a .50-caliber rifle," says Krasniqi. "You could kill a man from over a mile away. You can dismantle a vehicle from a mile away."

He says it can also be "very easily" used against helicopters and planes. "

BING BING BING BING

We all know he's full of it. Wouldn't it be great if we could expose him as a publicity seeker with no actual ties to the KLA?

tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-

60 minutes helps put the BS in CBS. I'm surprised they even get an audience.

Does the fact that what this "gunrunner" is supposedly doing is already very illegal have any bearing on this? It should.

I think that someone had developed a 20 or 30 mm rifle for the army? Wouldn't that be the most powerful sniper rifle in the world?

Actually, I think the most powerful sniper rifle in the world is the laser designator for precision air strikes.

What he did should be against the law !! Oh, wait.

You know, adults buy alcohol and then give it to kids - that should be against the law! Oh wait.

The Afghan rebels got those guns to fight the Russians. If Osama had become an upstanding businessman and spent time eating BBQ in Crawford with the rest of the Saudi princes and holding hands with Bush - would that make the guns OK?

What logic!!

I also recall that Irish dudes in the USA bought Ruger Mini-14s for the IRA. Better ban those.

CBS - didn't Danny Rather forbid his crew to carry guns even after one saved his bacon from some loonies with a gun.

MechAg...

Barret has a 25mm "payload" rifle prototyped. I don't thin it's been officially adopted by the army.

Do a web search for 25mm sniper rifle...

Rumor had it that they are calling it the payload rifle to lose the negative sound of "sniper"

what bs...

--Jim

I heard they cancelled the payload rifle, the recoil was apparently over the top.

So let me understand this...

Why would they spend that fracking much on a one shot one kill item when they could get at least ten suicide vests for the cost of one of those rifles.

Puhlease tell us another one..... :banghead:

And we all know what a problem we have had here in the U.S. with all of the recent .50 Cal super deadly ninja mass destruction sniper rifle attacks! It's time to put an end to the .50 Cal violence! For the children.

Oh, wait, none of that has ever happened....... :scrutiny: Let's not let a little thing like logic stand in our way!
