Looking for thoughts and opinions, especially from members who have experience with one or both of these models. I'm on the fence and can't decide which one I like better. Intended use would be with full house 357 loads and I'd like to option of using it hunting. Possibly adding a holo sight of some kind in the future. There are aspects of both that I like and if I could, I'd just buy them both.

What does everyone else think about these two?

I assume you mean the 5" slab side bbl 627 PC? I'd go with that one personally. I just think the V-comps are hideouse. JMO They are probably comparable in performance though. They have the same bbl length don't they? Plus the porting on the Vcomp accomplishes nothing. .357 full power loads are nothing out of a full size gun.

My 5" JM PC627 V-Comp was joined 5/08 by a new 4" 627 Pro. Superceded would be more correct. The 4" 627 Pro took some work to get cloase to the PC Shop's trigger - but the shorter revolver 'pointed' better - great balance vs the bigger clunky V-Comp. The comp - or muzzle blank - was something else to clean, too. Add the easily changed (no tools) front sight, and you can see why it was used so much more that I declared the V-Comp as surplus, selling it last fall. I had also bought a new 2 5/8" PC627 UDR 4/10 - and it, too, was far more fun to shoot. Actually, I used the funds to buy another 2 5/8" PC627 UDR!

This was my 627 stable last summer - all moonclip ready, another requirement:

I like the 4" 627 Pro over the similar 5" PC627. With some of the money saved, you could get a S&W 'Master Revolver Action' job - and have a better trigger than the 5" PC627. I also love the 'Blood Work' remakes - obviously! Their OR front sight is fine as-is, unlike my JM V-Comps black/black sights. My 'mature' eyes need help! The grips are a toss-up - the 4" 627 Pro now sports the JM's shown on the V-Comp - and the BW PC627's have a different grip, too - very subjective. Good luck!

Stainz

PS The hottest load I shoot is a +P .38 Special, although many of my homebrews are in .357M cases.

Thanks for the info Stainz. I'm really, really torn. I like both guns really. I like the slab barrel and angled lug of the PC and I like the solid, classic-yet-racey look of the V-Comp as well. I don't have the funds for both though.

I went with the 627pc over the ported model. The slab sides just spoke to me, and the balance is perfect. I do agree that it needs a trigger job as there is slight stacking near the end of the trigger pull. I had to ditch the stock grips for a pair of x frames the stock wood is nice but didn't fit my hands. But still my 627 is my favorite gun great looks and great balance.

Unfortunately this a choice based on personal preference. Don't expect much help from the crowd. I have both a 627PC and 627Pro. I like both, but the PC was pretty much ready from the box and I had to do a little work to the Pro to get it in the same shape as the PC. Both are seriously accurate. I wouldn't argue if you wanted a Pro, PC or Comp. Your choice.

I have the 627 P C in 38 super I love it great gun better with the Houge Big Butt Grip. Trigger worked her self out after 500+ rounds.

I think I'm just going to have to buy both. But since I can't find any V-Comps right now, the 627PC will have to be the first one. Bud's has them for $959 with free shipping. Add $15 for the FFL fee and I'm in for $975 total. I called my LGS for a price comparison and they quoted me $1350 plus tax. Can't see how the place stays in business.

I don't have the 627 v-comp, but I do have a (pre clinton) 4" 629 v-comp. Incredible trigger. I don't use the ported comp but rather the plain one. It has a chamfered cylinder and the ball detent lock up. It is a seriously beautiful piece of work. Everyone has their own taste though, so if the style isn't for you, then it isn't. But it is nice gun.

Alright, now I'm on the fence again. I was just about set on the 627PC....then I talked to my old man about it. He made fun of me for wanting a .357. He's a .44 Mag man and he says I need the 629PC for more power. He says I should get the .44, especially if I wanted to carry the gun with me deer season.

But I've never enjoyed shooting .44 mags. It's just a little too much recoil to be enjoyable to me. For a hunting pistol only, it would be okay. But I don't want to spend the money on a PC gun and only shoot once a year before deer season. I just can't figure out if I should toughen up and get used to shooting a .44 mag more or if I should go with a caliber I know I enjoy and just be more cautious with shot placement if I decide to take the 627 hunting. Anyone have any advice?

So, remind me - is it primarily to be a deer hunting or a SD/range gun? If the former, I'd say consider the .44mag and some reloading gear. Not for any silly machismo, but rather because the .44mag is a very versatile cartridge, so you can have the best of both if you reload. Cheaper to shoot, too.

I have the 627 PC. I think it's a great gun. Can't speak to the V-comp. It's a bit more than I needed.
I stuck a Burris Fastfire 2. I can't speak to long term reliability since I've on had the gun a few months and the Burris went on about 3 weeks ago. I've only put about 150 rds through it since.

Primarily a fun range gun with a secondary option of deer and hog hunting.

I already reload, just have to pick up the dies and components.

The 627 V-Comp with the heavy ovid barrel is a bit too muzzle heavy for my tste. It shoots very well but is muzzle heavy and the comp ia a pain to clean. I purchased the 5 inch 627PC version which suits me in terms of balance and shooter comfort. Today I would probably purchse the 4 inch 627 pro and adjust the trigger to get performance similar to the 627PC.

I'm happy with the V-comp. The recoil is straight back, and even near full power 357 loads were very shootable. It is another #@*& thing to clean, however. It does also make it considerably louder. I need to compare it to a 686 firing the same rounds, but I was wearing plugs and muffs and was still impressed by the boom coming out of it.

I have the dreaded two-tone model of current manufacture. At first I thought it looked funny, but it is starting to grow on me. I just wish they melonited the entire gun, instead of leaving the cylinder, trigger, hammer, and comp in brushed stainless. It is different.

I kind of like the two-tone look. The ones I've seen have the black grips and I think some nice wood would really make a lot of difference on enhancing the looks. Goodyears for shooting, exotic wood for photo sessions!

I like them all, but I have a 627-3 PC V-COMP. I got a great deal on it, plus I'm a big time car guy & LUV the way it says .357 MAG.V-8 on the bbl. :)

I wouldn't step up to a .44 unless you like shooting that cartridge. Don't let your dad badger you into something you don't want.

That being said, you mentioned feral hogs? If I were to be handgun hunting feral hogs, I'd want at least a .44 mag. They tend to get a little angry if you surprise them. For deer, a 5" bbl .357 with the right ammo should be fine.

You could get a .454 or a .460 and call your dad a wimp! Just a thought.
