that they are...they were put on after the gun was bought as i dont believe that S&W offers the 405 from the factory

they are pretty soft and grippy...with the airpocket on the backstrap...but they are not sticky and i have had no trouble with them grabbing my shirt or inside my pocket

Thanks !
That is the best picture of how they fit the gun that I have seen.

I have a 442 (love the "black") and been wanting some ct grips. I have read much about how the 305 and 405 help with recoil.

Looks like the 405 is for me

1st Wheelgun is a 642

Not a bad start to my new wheelgun addiction. I don't know why I haven't been toting one of these around from the start. It just disappears in my pocket.

Holy Cow!!! I just got home from the range after shooting my new 642 for the first time. All I can say is WOW. I drove all the way home with the biggest smile ever. It shoots like a dream. I think I'm in love.

Just picked up another "no-lock" 642.

Now I have 1 for the safe, 1 for carry, and 1 (the one with the lock) for burning through ammo at the range. While I will fire ~100 rds. through the new 642 I will now carry, I like spreading my round-count between a couple of these.

Now, if I could only carry in my home state!
Good thing I travel plenty...

gm19 that would be great to see an update.

SAA Alive, well here and running hard on the hamster wheel. Making hay as they say. Last HG purchase a bottom feeding semi-auto chucker, manufactured by that red headed bastage stepchild of S&W Walther.

I think y'all will find those CT 405s quite to your liking. I have them on two J Frames.

XS dot on your 442/642

pikid89: first of all you are welcome. About your question, a while back, a member named TT installed a XS dot on his 442. Go to page 108 (post #2700) and page 109 (post #2702) to have more informations.
Anyway I think that people like Gemini Custom or other big custom shops can do that for you.

Best regards, 5-SHOTS.

what does "no lock" refer to?

What does the "lock" refer to and why would I not want a 642 with a lock?

Went to Cheaper than Dirt today and fondled a bunch of S&W J frames. They had a 642 (?) Airweight for $369 (promo price supposedly). Can't believe I left without it.

First time I ever held a J frame and boy did it feel nice. As soon as I got home I got out my Glock 26, unloaded it, and put it in my front pocket for comparison. No comparison. I also can't believe how great the J frame felt in my hand - fit like a glove.

Gonna get me one of these and keep it in my pocket!

the lock refers to the internal key lock that S&W installed on their revolvers in the last few years
the key hole (also known as a "hilary hole") is located directly above the cylinder release
refer to post 3909 for a pre lock 642
and to post 3905 for a 642 with a lock

the pre lock is generally preferred in the revolver community based on the fear/possibility that the lock may malfunction/inadvertently engage under recoil possibly rendering the weapon useless in your most critical hour

there are however very few (if any?) actual instances of this happening

on the plus side, if you do have a lock model and you are scared of it...simply remove it
it is quick and easy and there is a video of how to do it on youtube

yes, $369 for sure. It was a promo price. Guess I should have got one. Will try to go back tomorrow and make sure it was a 642. Do AirWeight's come in the 442 model?

Just want to say I love my 642 even if it has a lock. I've never had a problem with the lock but if I find a good plug to fill the hole I'd probably get rid of it with no regrets. I don't even have the key any more.

Perhaps a dumb question

I bought a 442 last April (love the "black" look)

It has a 1 7/8" barrel. I love the short barrel and the gun over all for pocket carry. But why 1 7/8" and not 2" ???

Is there something special about the 1/8" ?

Joe

"But why 1 7/8" and not 2" ??? "

I have no ideal but let me take a shot at it. The j-frame came out just a little bit after Colt release the DS which do have a 2" barrel I think S&W was trying to make just a smaller weapon all around. Not sure if that the reason just my hypotheses about it.

be safe

There are many posts on carry rounds. They seem to be based on target tests. And they all sound good.

But (I hope the answer is no) has anyone here had to put them to the test in real life situations?

There's an interesting thread here comparing .38 spl, .38 +p, and .357 mag.

I've read a lot on those two over the last few years, and own revolvers in both. (642 and 65)

But that thread raised some interesting new issues for me about .357 mag.

uncle peter - i sent you a pm. it has some links to other sites with some threads about the locks. how to take them out, how you can fill or not fill the hole.

I don't think that's it. The J frame (stretched I frame) was introduced in 1950 with the Chiefs Special (later called Model 36). The Detective Special was introduced in 1927.
