Dry firing

If you can punch out you shot primers. If not you must know someone who reloads. Cut down pencil erasers and glue them in 5 empty cases and there you go homemade snap caps.:what: Have been doing this for years, Works in all calibers. pistol, rifle and revolvers too. Very cost effective, lots cheaper them snap caps.

I just posted a new thread about lights. (See sig line.)

IMO, a light is important for several reasons.

* You need to see where you're walking in a dark place.
* You may want to read a book or a map in your tent at night.
* If a potential perp approaches you, you can illuminate before firing.
* A momentary blast of light could save lead, limbs, life and a court case.

X42. Still the best, even if 340 M&P is probably better.

Wait. Did I say that in the x42 club? Whoa.

At ease. Smoke 'em if you've got 'em.

John&andy'sdad..I also have big meaty hands and bought a set of stocks from S&W performance center. For me, the gun is more comfortable to shoot and more controllable.

nematocyst..I almost bought a M42 a while back but got the 642 instead. I still like the looks of the lemon squeezer a lot. Do my eyes deceive me or is the new version lock free?

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right place to post. I checked the "rules" and don't believe im breaking them.

Yubes88 - There are specific and rigorous rules for selling firearms on THR as well as a specific forum. Go to the firearms for sale forum at the bottom of the home page, read the rules, and good luck.

Great idea for homeade snap caps. I'll bring a few cases home with me the next time I take my 642 to the range. Question: Would this type of do-it-yourself snap cap also work with .22LR rimfire ammo?

Hi everyone, I have a question about my 642, where should I apply oil to the mechanical parts? thanks in advance.

Remove the side plate, clean out any foreign material, apply lubrication to friction points - these will be easily identified by slowly working the action and observing what is rubbing on what.

homemade snap caps

jerico34,
I am not sure how you would get this to work in a 22rf, I have given it a lot of thought and I don't see it working. All the ideas I came up with seemed to fall apart when I tried to make a prototype. I am thinking that there is a few great minds reading this that may come up with something. As for me, I am stumped.
I have made them for 380, 38/357,45 and 9mm in handgun cases. 30/30,30-06, 6.5mm, 7mm mag and 7.62x39 in rifle along with 20 and 12 gauge in shotgun.
I put up a challenge to all readers to help jerico34 and all us 22rf shooters to make a working prototype.
Lets hope for the best.

removal of sideplate

sniknih,
You will need a few things before you try to do this.
1- a rubber hammer.
2- a good set of gunsmith screwdrivers.
3- complete instructions on how to do this.
It is not hard by any means, But you can scratch you handgun and that might be a bummer.
Go online and get the info you need, It is all there.
Good luck.

And ... we're live!

Hey, here's a topic we haven't visited in a while.
I could search the archives for it, but am feeling lazy.

If you were going to have
a 642 refinished in tough black,
what would it be, by whom, where?

Links are good.

Dear 642-ers,

I resisted for a while, because I love my Colt Cobra, but when I saw a 642 for sale near me, which had custom trigger work done, but was selling for the regular price, I went for it. Since then, I have realized just how near-perfect the 642 is for all-the-time carry. So, I'm in!

Thanks!

LBS

custom trigger

Yes it is nice to have a trigger job on the 642, Mine has one.
Best money I ever spent(next to my 642). J frames are known for good triggers at best. And one with a trigger job is so sweet.
Next is magna porting.

Have anyone got the new 2.5" 642 yet that's on the Smith & Wesson site? Just wondering if anyone think that a little more then one half inch longer barrel would give any advantages.

be safe

Springfield, I'm sure the 342 is welcome here. Close enough in design, just a couple of ounces lighter. (Ouch) Welcome.

Johnny, I'm curious about the 2.5" as well. Can't imagine it'll make any significant difference, but I'm curious.

Nem, on the road ...

stuck trigger

My apologies if this has been discussed before, but I searched the thread and couldn't find anything.

I've put approximately 200 rounds through my 642 with no problems (except for FTFs with a specific ammo). I've probably dry-fired 2 or 3 times that much with no trouble, but the other day I was dry-firing and something odd happened with the trigger.

A few times it got stuck in the forward position. It came loose with a hard pull, almost like it was just really tight when it was forward. I kept dry-firing and it happened a few more times - it would get stuck, I'd pull it loose, get some normal pulls out of it, and stuck again.

I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this, and if it was something some more dry-firing would smooth out or if I should consider contacting S&W.

I would send it back to S&W. If you are confortable with mechanicals remove the side plate and work the action and see if you can see a burr, peice of metal, etc. that doesn't belong.
