S&W 342 (no dash, no lock) Only 11.5oz empty and about 14.2oz loaded! It's a joy to carry around!

Very nice Springfield.
Thanks! It isn't all that bad on recoil considering that it's 11.5oz unloaded. I use Buffalo Bore standard pressure LSWCHP FBI Load for serious work, but for practice I usually use 130gr WWB .38spl and they're not too bad. Last time I went out I shot 150 rounds and it wasn't my hand itself that hurt so much, but my trigger finger was hitting the trigger guard and/or getting pinched in between the end of the trigger & trigger guard.

Well that was painless.

Here is a little more: Three weeks ago my local fun store had a brand new 642-1 no lock in the box. A new no lock? It was mine on the spot.

The s/n is CNV xxx. Supica 3r does not list this range of s/ns. I do not know when S&W stamps the s/n. So it could be an old production run numbered recently, or a new production run of no locks. Two keys were kindly provided by S&W for the lock which is not there.

Today was revolver day in honor of the new 642. I aired out my M14-2, M 15-3, 17-4, M36, M66-1, and a Colt Cobra. The 642 was last to shoot.

Whoa. Arthur-Itis is going to be in high spirits for a few days.

Oops. Got timed out. Had to log on again. One of these days I'll get used to these new fangled gun forums. Ha.

Although I was brought up properly in the K frame society, I kind of lost interest and went to the dark side when my department permitted semi-autos for duty carry in the mid-seventies, if I recall correctly. I carried a Smif M59 in uniform and an M66 when in the suits or off duty. In the late eighties, Beretta 92fs were issued and required carry on duty in uniform. It is but a reliable and accurate brick in my hand. When I retired in '93, they were too new to allow retirees to buy their duty gat, so I was Barettaless for a while. I stumbled along trying to find the perfect 9MM for geezer carry. The S&W 39-2 came close and the S&W 3913 came closer, but only the latter hit the sweet spot. Later, a Beretta 85FS filled in for a few years. What a beautiful gat even though it is chambered in Europellet 380. Still, there was something missing.

I had a brief affair with 1911s as carry blasters. My rotundness absolutely ruled out the Colt GCNM for carry. The Colt Officer's ACP was a candidate for awhile, but I was always leery muscle memory for DA/SA would be a problem.

Last year, I found a nice used M36 at a good price. It was my 1st J frame. Always with me and always five for sure, with five or ten in HKS speedloaders. It wore Pachmayr Compac grips. Carried a lot and shot a little. The narrow 1/10" front sight was hard to find with old eyes.

I continued stumbling around, found this site, and the rest is history. Interesting, but Painful.

Today, after running the K frames with +Ps and the M36 and Cobra with standard pressure loads, I loaded the 642 with ancient Rem/Peters 158 gr JHP +P. Ouch. Owie, ouch, ouch. Ouch.

In preparation for the day, I had swapped the Pachmayr Compacs from the M36 to the 642 and about 500 dry fire cycles. This was enough to raise a good callus on my finger and get a smooooth trigger.

I am going to need a lot of practice. And, some Ibuprofin.

Best to all 642 thread winners.

(I'll post a finding about speedloaders in the M36 another day).

A few times it got stuck in the forward position. It came loose with a hard pull, almost like it was just really tight when it was forward. I kept dry-firing and it happened a few more times - it would get stuck, I'd pull it loose, get some normal pulls out of it, and stuck again.

That definitely isn't normal. Sounds like a problem with either the cylinder hand or the ratchet on the back of the cylinder. If either (or both) are out of spec, it could cause the problems you are describing. Sorry to hear of your troubles, but S&W will take care of the problem for you.

jad0110 - I got a return label from them and I'm actually in the process of sending it in. "In the process" because the closest firearm-accepting Fedex is too far away for me to be at work on time.

Of course, as soon as I contacted them it hasn't happened, :banghead: but I'm sending it in anyway. If it was a plinker (and whose 642 is?) I wouldn't worry about it, but it's my carry gun and so I want to make sure it's certified GTG.

and jad.....oops ;)

Thanks for sharing the events that brought you here your acquisitions and experiences. It make this wallop of a thread all that richer for those who follow.

RD checking in. Thought I'd share a photo of a little diamond back water snake I headshot the other night with my EDC 642. I was dropping off a couple horses around midnight, following a rodeo. My kid screamed "snake!" from the entrance to the barn. These snakes aren't poisonous, but they do bite pretty hard (I speak from firsthand experience), so this one had to go. The shot was in low light, and a lucky one...but I'll take it! The little 642-1 in the pocket all of the time is a real comfort.

One of the nastiest dispositioned forms of life on the planet. If they were poison there wouldn't be anyother life forms. (Well maybe a slight exageration but I wouldn't bet against them.)

In the interest of peace in the club, and because I respect you both, I'm going to restrain my professional ecologist self from saying what I think about killing snakes. (I'll just say that if you have to shoot rodents over running your barn next, remember shooting the snake.)

Instead I'll say that I've moved across the country - from as far as you can go west to as far as you can go east - and could not carry my 642 (long story with multiple reasons why). Same goes for two rifles and a 65.

Suffice to say, I miss them, and hope to have them shipped soon.

Hey Nem...barn cats = 0 rodents. Nah, I don't kill snakes just to kill 'em, but this guy was in a bit too close to the kid's habitat. This is Texas...there's not a big shortage of snakes, that's for sure! We actually see a lot of these by the tanks (ponds) on my property. It's pretty easy to tell the difference between these and a Water Moccasin, since Water Moccasin float when they stop swimming and these don't. If it floats though, it gets lead every time!

And good luck to ya on the move!

Howdy Everyone. I'm proud to say that I will be a member of the 642 club very soon. I'm waiting on it to arrive from it's former owner. It is coming with a el paso pocket holster, altamont boot grips, cyl and slide grips and some speed strips. I can't wait to go shoot it. I'll post a follow up asap

Nem

Glad you got moved.

You must feel quite naked without your shootin irons. Hope you have all the clubs and knives with you though.

Actually you may not need any of that now that you have moved "back East" to civilization where men are gentlemen and women genteel. ;)

Yup.

Yup. Actually, the clubs are sticks, and I carry at least one everywhere I go on my pack. But I do have the knives, also.

Actually you may not need any of that now that you have moved "back East" to civilization where men are gentlemen and women genteel.
You must be hanging out in different states with different bars than I am. Up here, as far north and east as one can go in the US, it's a different culture. Glad to have the sticks and knives, be glad to get the revolvers and rifles out here. :scrutiny:

Pardon my ignorance. I did not know of the club until today.
I have been a 642 owner for 2 weeks now. It's my first revolver after 15 years of semi auto only. This will be my main carry gun.
I like this little gun a lot. Unfortunately my wife does too, so I'll probably be getting another one soon.

this is my club application
I just got my first 642 for when i get my permit in 2 months
its got CT grips...which i love
does anyone know how one would go about getting a different front sight on this thing

its not a pinned front sight so it would have to be gunsmithed...but does anyone know of a shop or somewhere that can install say an XS big dot?
