642 Cylinder Question

My 637 (same except for the hammer) does not do this. The cylinder spins freely whether or not there are rounds in it. It sounds like your cylinder might not be swinging out far enough.

Thanks for the response. I don't think I'm describing the above issue very well. I've since had a chance to check the revolver a little more. As I said originally I noticed that when loading the cylinder of the 642 that the loaded rounds drag against the lower metal extension of the recoil shield. Initially I thought that the cylinder would not spin once a round touched the frame, but have since found that with a little pressure the cylinder will in fact turn. So what I'm asking is, is it normal for the rounds to contact the frame requiring a little additional force to turn the cylinder in order to load?

I don't think that would be normal. On mine there is a bit of clearance there, less than 1/16 of an inch, but enough that the rims don't touch the frame.

your loaded rounds in a S&W revo should noticeably RATTLE back and forth. If not the cylinider will tie up with a fired round and you will have a single shot. There should be no resistance to putting a cartridge in the chamber. HTH

Thanks again for the feedback. I don't think I'm going to worry about this issue as the revolver seems to be working fine. As I mentioned the cylinder does spin, but the tips of the loaded rounds do drag against the metal extension. When empty there is about a 1/16 gap between the cylinder and the frame in front of this extension. I did call the gun shop to ask about this though, & a very condescending salesperson at the shop told me that this was normal. If it become worse I will check into it more, but it doesn't seem to be a problem as I can still easily load the cylinder. Thanks again though for the responses everyone.
