One of the guns that I shot at the indoor range today was my new 642. I bought it about a month ago but hadn't shot it yet. For today it was wearing Hogue Monogrips.
I shot S&B 158 grain FMJ at ten yards. I figured ten yards to be the outside range for which this gun would be used in self-defense. I do not plan to use +P ammo. The gun was just a bit snappy but nothing that I found to be uncomfortable. The muzzle rise was greater than my Model 13 with the same ammo, but again not too bad. At first I found the gun to shoot a little low, but as I got used to the trigger it shot pretty much point of aim, maybe a bit to the left, but that was probably me. I was shooting at an eight inch target and at ten yards and I could keep everything within. Below is fifteen rounds that I shot into five inches.
I think this is a good start. I will try +P my next time, but for now I'm happy. I hope to be able to get that group down to three inches and maybe five inches out at 15 yards rather than ten. Remarkably, for today the gun outshot my DAO Model 13-3, but I think overall the 13-3 has greater potential. Neither gun was shot a lot, maybe 50 rounds each. I had a number of guns to check out today so time was limited.
I think you can count me among the 642 fans.
