I have a K31 waiting for me to pick up at the gun shop. Was supposed to get it this weekend, but other events got in the way.

Anyway, I've never shot a K31 and know little about it. Was wondering, ballistic wise - what more popular cartridges is the 7.5 Swiss closest to? .30-06? 7 mm? 8 mm? 300 Win Magnum?

How does it perform generally? What distance is it effective to? What is its velocity and how does it hold up over tdistance? Would it be effective at Boomershoot? Anything else I ought to know about it?

I've been told and looking at it's weights and velocities, it is very similar to .308 Winchester. Brass is available and I believe you can convert .284 brass to Swiss. It might say 7.5*55 but the bullet diameter is .308, so bullets are cheap. And yep they are accurate:D .

Longhorn said it already

7.5x55 is very close to 7.62x51/.308 but by no means interchangeable!!!(They do have .308 diameter bores)

The 7.5 GP 11 round generates around 45,000 PSI chamber pressure and the 7.62Nato and commercial .308 generate much more. The original Gp11 round used 174 grain spitzer bullet and is practicaly match grade qaulity. Any reload using a .308 caliber bullet of 165-175 grains is probably going to shoot really well. Id like to see some 7.5x55 loaded with Nosler partitions.

According to www.swissrifles.com, the actual bore is .307, but .308 works fine. Ballistics for the GP11 are 174grn@2550. Recoil is rather mild in the rifle, and the balance is nice, IMO.

swissrifles.com has some reloading info, but you have to search the "ammunition" section. Hornady has 165grn hunting ammo in this caliber.
