Yup, no one has guns. Nobody has more than 20 rounds of ammo. There's no good reason for that, look at the discussion board on a pro-gun site--even they don't keep much ammo on hand...
Yeah, I keep lots of ammo on hand. I buy it when its cheap, shoot it when I have time. And there's nothing wrong with that. (Hide your sport or your rights and they'll go away...)
How true. . . . as "Fred" (FredsM14Stocks.com) would say, "they're just hiding for their rights!!". Great, makes me sorta glad I'm getting old as fast as I am and won't have to watch what all that excellent hiding is going to produce for us.
I have at least 10k of just 7.62x39 ammo, but not sure how many more than that, since I too buy it when I see a good deal and shoot it up when I get the chance. I don't spend a lot of time "counting", but if the pile starts "looking small", it's time to stock up.
I want to stop shooting because I want to, not because I have to. I don't want to run out, only to find the supply has dried up - I like looking ahead. With today's price volatility, and with everyone being "out of stock" on half their stuff most of the time anymore, it only makes sense if one can swing it financially. I paid less than $100/thousand a year and a half back, the same ammo is now $180/k or more - this inflation rate even outweighs credit card interest . . .
When you have several semi-automatic rifles and several family members shooting them, it doesn't take long to run through a thousand rounds, definitely less than a day, so even 10k could only be a few weekends at Bulletfest or Knob Creek, or even just a few good days out back.
Most of my supply of 7.62x39 is simply FMJ blasting ammo, since I just want it to run smoothly when I pull the trigger, and many/most softpoints and HPs seem to FTF from time to time.
For other calibers, I usually keep some expanding ammo on hand, in addition to inexpensive and simple blasting ammo if appropriate.
For example, in .223, I have a larger pile of blasting ammo, and a small pile of expanding/frangible ammo around, since I HD with an AR or two and prefer HPs to FMJs for that sort of stuff. I do about the same with my .308s, but keep a supply of FMJ blasting ammo around in addition to a few hundred rounds of factory match ammo, since I have a couple rattle guns that shoot .308, in addition to a couple precision rifles. I buy match ammo in 200 round cartons *minimum*, and normally try to buy it in 500 round lots so it's all the same lot number and for the price/shipping break. The same lot number is important when a match runs over 100 rounds and you shoot a few a year - nice to be able to shoot all of that out of one lot with no concern for unexpected changes and no concern for constantly monitoring lot numbers.
I don't keep 10k rounds of 6.5-284 or .260 on hand for my match rifles (enough to burn a barrel up four or five times), but do have 500 pieces of brass for each, and buy my powder & primers in bulk and bullets by the 500 carton too. I do this as much for the discounts as I do for the components having matching lot numbers over wider time periods.
