Hey y'all ... I recently inherited a quanity of 7.62 x 39 ammo on stripper clips in sealed cans. I estimate around 8,000 rounds and from the one open can I would say it looks like pretty good stuff in great condition. I don't have a rifle in this caliber ... Looks like it would make a great varmint round ... I'd like to get a rifle and perhaps put a scope on it so I can shoot this stuff ... Like to keep total cost under $500 ... any suggestions of what I should get ... I have most of my hunting rifle needs met but nothing in 7.62 x 39 ... any and all advice will be appreciated .... thanks ... :)

I love my Century AK Yugo Underfolder... you might find a used one for around $500. The Mini 30 is another great option. If you want to go even cheaper, a good SKS will do the trick too.

If you want to scope the gun, I think the Mini30 is best of the three.
 
I'd get a Saiga with the 16" barrel. It can be converted to traditional AK ergos later if desired, and is about as accurate as you can get in an AK form factor. Right now, they're still around $350-$400 (max) new.

youd be lucky to hit a varmint (of small size) at 100 yards with most common rifles chambered for it. great little round though... AK clone or an SKS makes good rifles. not sure about the mini 30.... never shot it, heard it was great.

Get yourself a Saiga AK and convert it. That way you'll have a real Russian AK, and they're great quality.
 
Any more details on the ammo is it copper washed steel or brass any numbers on the base of the rim around the primer. You could have some of the steel core Chinese ammo worth between .50 to $1.00 a round in some corners.

Thanks for the input y'all ... please keep it coming ... the rounds look just like the picture posted above ... some foreign language on the can ... my dad left me these as well as a truck load of other ammo and assorted stuff ... he was a big believer in 'Buy it cheap and Stack it deep' ...

having that much ammo sounds like too big of a burden for one person...... please give me some of it so I can share the burden.... :}
 
I think you need an SKS... It's not a very good varmint round though, too much bullet drop.

I wish I could happen upon 8K rounds of good ammo... :(
 
That picture is of Chinese Steel core ammo,sells for about a $1 a round on ammo sites .50 cents a round on places like gunbrokers. High probability that its corrosive also.

It's way over priced, just because it can't be imported anymore. Its not AP or anything. Yes i have seen the people asking up to .50 cents a round for it at gun shows, but nobody ever buys at that in anything but ammunition collection type numbers. It is probibly the most accurate of the M43 surplus stuff though.

If i were you i would order a $179 yugo SKS from samco and shoot it at your own pace. Be sure to clean with hoppes #9 or something that is made for corrosive ammo, as the primers are to be treated as known corrosive in that stuff.
 
SKS, Saiga/AK... Those are your go-to guns for all things x39.
 
When dealing with corrosive ammo the primer is the culprit it leave deposit of corrosive salts which attract moisture,this will cause rusting in the bore especially non chromed lined ones like the YUGO,the gas system and on the metal surfaces of the rifle.

Humidity play a big part in how fast the rusting process starts,places with very low to no humidity it might not show up for days,however places with high humidity if not cleaned the rusting process can start in as little as a few hours. You don't need any special chemicals or cleaners as stated Hoppes #9 can be use or just plain old water all your doing is diluting and washing away the salts. It's good stuff just clean your rifles.
 
Sell the ammo!

Use your ill gotten gains :) to buy a nice CZ & scope (or a mini 30) and reloading goodies for 7.62x39 and have at it with quality rounds from a superior rifle.

I wouldn't shoot that stuff in a rifle I valued, but that's me. No corrosive stuff, no steel core and certainly no FMJ. Can't hunt with it - I don't want it.

8000 rounds and an easy 75 cents apiece - you do the math.
 
you can do some research by looking at the numbers on the shell and find when it was made it may not even be corrosive ammo, and if it is you can still shoot it you just have to clean your rifle well after shooting.
think a sks or ak or mak 90, any one of those would be a good choice to use up the ammo at the range the stripper clips are actually designed to be used on the sks.
