I think that's an after-market AK mag fed through an adapter of sorts. In fact, one of the bad HK clone makers used to make this exact gun and it fed from AK mags. Hallelujah! I've finally found what I've always wanted! I'm looking to standardize my guns to 2 or 3 calibers (9mm and 7.62 x 39). Freakin' sweet. Now I have an excuse to get an HK clone!

There is a thread over on ar15.com about the rifle. Someone called PTR-91 and confirmed that it is not an AK mag, but a proprietary design.

Special Weapons did make an HK clone that took AK mags, but it was not terribly reliable from what I hear. I think using a proprietary magazine design is kind of a wash in terms of the cost and benefits. While a proprietary design is going to be more expensive and less readily available than AK mags, I would hope that from a design perspective it will prove to be more reliable with an HK style design.

I posted a thread about 7.62x39mm HKs. What with the confusion about Cohaire, Todd Bailey, and Special weapons, the future looked bleak to me. I was aware of the rumors of a 7.62x39mm PTR, and had guarded hope.
I'm not hugely impressed, but I'm still very interested.
In my opinon, this rifle would make a good piece to work on. With some good HK furniture, tweaking, and accessories, it could be a beaut. But I dunno--the use of a proprietary magazine is rather upsetting. Why not just use the tested and popular AK mag?

As I said above the proprietary magazine does not really bother me. Trying to mod an existing platform to use a particular magazine I can imagine would make for a potentially unreliable gun. Designing a new magazine might have been a way to make the gun more reliable. Using AK mags would have been nice, but only it proved to be reliable. Just speculation on my part.

To utilize an AK magazine the entire magwell area of this rifle would need to be changed. I think PTR91, Inc. has stamping dies for the G3 receiver only, which has a large box profile than any AK due to the different lengths of the cartridges used.

I would have preferred an HK 33 sized receiver, modified slightly to accept the 7.62x39 AR15 magazines. Like I said, though, I don't think that PTR91, Inc. has stamping dies for the smaller HK33 receiver, only the G3 sized receiver.

But Number 6, PTR designed this rifle from the ground up. I'm pretty sure that other HK clones in 7.62x39mm used AK magazines, and with work they could be made to run great.
If PTR designed their rifle around the AK magazine, it would be a lot more attractive to me.
Though I guess you can always make the argument that, metaphorically, the magazine should fit the gun and not the other way around.

That is a Thermold AK magazine design, dont know if the top end and lips are proprietairy or not, but the rest visible in the photo isnt.

Thats also not an HK 32 clone, its made on a 91 style recievor stamping, where as the real 32 style (not a converted 91) was made much more like the 33 in terms of the dimentions of the recievor ect...

This thing just looks like the Flemming converted 91's with a propierity magazine, magazine well, or most likely both.

Yeah, I think that the differences between this PTR and the 32 clones are pretty significant. I heard that many 32 clones were just butcherjobs of 7.62x51mm and 9mm parts with barrel and magwell adjustments.
