Gents -
Recently it has occurred that I do not have a single launcher for 7.62x39 projectiles. Saiga 5.45x39 already on hand. Plenty of 7.62x54R options covered. If all I am looking for is the ability to utilize 7.62x39 in scavenged scenario, would folks recommend a lowly SKS to fit the bill? Or should I pick up a Saiga in 7.62x39? Or AK47? Or AR-15 upper?

I'm leaning toward SKS... Thanks for input.

Personally this is what I am saving my pennies for:

CZ 527 carbine in 7.62x39.

One nice feature is that since surplus corrosive ammo will likely be shot out of it, cleanup is a snap (since its a bolt action).

I haven't tried one yet, but I'm just throwing the suggestion out there for something for you to think about.

Hard to beat an SKS for the money. If you want to mod it with high cap mags, and aftermarket stock though, I would pass and go to an AK. SKS's, as issued, are super reliable, and decently accurate for bargain prices.

SKS is nice if your eyes can still see; same for the AK. If you want to go with optics you can make them work on an AK as many have. .

Bolt action like the CZ ( I do not own one ) rifle seems to be a good choice from what I have heard.

I went with an 7.62x39 AR just because..... Like the ammo and the weapon for certain hunting chores. I tend to shoot the corrosive stuff out of my AKs and SKSs but use non corrosive stuff out of the AR again just because?. Never had a problem with either.

A 7.62x39 saiga will do everything a sks can do and a lot more for thr same money.

Let's see, I have a couple SKSs, a Saiga, a couple other AKs and a Mini 30 in that caliber. All things considered I think the SKS is the best bang for the buck.

"I buy brand new Saiga's for the same price that old SKS's are going for."

Oh yeah, where?

If you could get a Saiga for the same price as a SKS, I would say buy the Saiga. I see SKSs for sale occasionally around $200. I haven't seen a Saiga for that price since I bought mine 10 years ago for $139.

DesertFOX I never had much of a desire to have any thing to do with that caliber ever again, after VET NAM to many bad memorys of that hacking sound it makes. (( BUT ))
A little CZ 527 762X39 CARBINE came our way and because my Son and I both are just crazy about CZ`S my Son bought it . All we had to shoot in it was Wolf Brand HPS and were amazed less than a inch at a 100yds. I called the guys at CZ in KC and told them and they laught and told me that was the ammo the little gun was designed to shoot. Bought 3 or 4 cases of ammo, Don`t have to reload for it, and I use it for a walk around rifle and just about every thing else. I have shot varmits, coyotes, hogs, and a few deer with it and it has become one of my favorite rifles, and it is great for an old fat guy to go for a walk with . Might take a look at the CZ. Good Luck To You: ken

another vote for the ak47
cheap ,very reliable and mags are easy to get and only around 10 to 15dollars ea i have a centurion39 milled ,its heavy but accurate

siagas for the price of a sks;
centerfire sys #sai-762 for 300dollars
in kentucky sks sells for 250 to 300 dollars

Ah, thank you gentlemen, especially for the CZ 527 tip. That is looking like a "must have". I hold a C&R FFL so the SKS can come direct to me and I do not have one. So I guess I should get one just for the heck of it and to burn up a line in my bound book!

Ruger, and Savage make Bolt actions in a 7.62x39 as well. Not certain if the price points are any better than the CZ and from what I hear the CZ'x are real accurate and well worth the price.

I just bought a norinco "carbine" 16.5inch bbl . short, light ( about 6.5lb) Easy to handle. thats my suggestion. sks of coarse.

He's right. SKS prices have gone WAY up from what they were 6 years ago. The cheapest I've seen a SKS in the last year was $350.00. They are hardly worth their asking price anymore. I'd happily spend a few more bucks and get an AKM.

Classic Arms had them for $299 for the past 6 months. Now they are $349. I buy 'em up when they all go on sale. And they do from time to time. I have not seen any decent SKS (old) around under $300 for awhile.
