It matters which Wolf JHP they were testing, though. Wolf 124gr "Military Classic" JHP (Ulyanovsk) expanded very reliably, but Wolf 122gr "black box" JHP (Tula, IIRC) tended to just yaw and occasionally expand a little from the rear once it turned. The Russian factories just reshuffled their brands this year, though, so I'm still sorting out which factories are producing what brands now.

Okay so finally remembered to look this up. The ammo was all brown bear. 123 gr fmj, 123 gr hp, and 125 gr sp.

The SP expanded to .65, the jacket peeled back instead of fragmenting, weight retention was 80%, penetration was 14 inches, they talked about uniform mushrooming, and creating a large permeant wound channel.

The fmj penetrated 16+ inches but lacked fragmentation or significant deformation of the tissue simulant.

The HP penetrated 15 inches, showed inconsistent deformation and resulting fragmentation. It performed just like a fmj until about 7 inches of penetration.

The article is called: The Best Defense 7.62x39mm in the Guns & Ammo Complete Book of the AK 47 June, 2010.

I just gave a very brief summary of the article. The author favored the SP due to quick deformation, deposit of large amounts of energy and penetration to a reasonable depth.
